i need to make a temporary sheath for a fairly large fixed blade, anyone have suggestions for a non leather sheath that is easy to make? leather is possible but i dont have any local leather shops in my area. thanks!

I tried doing a search in this forum but the search feature very rarely works for me. :(

darkest,
Is there a reason why you dont have normal sheath done?? If it isnt fancy, it shouldnt be that costly...

What type of knife is it for??

Is it a sheath that you need fast??

making a leather sheath isnt that hard if you have the stuff to do it

PM me if I can help

I have made recently about five or six quick sheaths out of what I call "poor man's kydex". I got several old plastic binders that we were throwing out at work and cut the covers off. Each cover is about 10'' x 12'' and will work for two small knives or one large one. Just lay the knife in the middle more or less and fold plastic over . Using a drill and pop rivets just pop rivet the sheath together, looser near the knife handle area and tighter as you go down the blade. The most important is the first rivet installed where you want the knife to stop in the sheath when you insert it. Do that one first then just one more rivet at a time so as not to get any wrinkles. When you get done just trim all the excess overlap beyond the rivets with a heavy duty scissors.

I also add one grommet at the very top and hang a piece of 550 cord thru the grommet to either hang from your belt or hook on to something. If you don't have a grommet just drill a quarter inch hole and run the cord thru it. Do not crease the plastic material after folding or it will eventually crack. Just leave it folded and it will last until you damage it somehow. Also, smash the rivets flat and use a washer on the side opposite the rivet head.

Hope that makes sense. It sounds a lot harder than it really is. Takes about 10 to 15 minutes working slowly. I can't post a picture or I would.

Cardboard and duct tape, see Andy's work in the Swamp Rat forum. You can make it waterproof, rigid, and secure enough to hold the knife in upside down.

If you have access to a really heavy duty stapler it makes it easy to throw together sheaths out of leather or other fiberous material. It is best to make the sheath three layers thick. You have the two side layers and a central layer cut out to leave space for the blade. You staple the combination through the 3-layer sections so that your blade never comes close to the staples. I have hacked appart old purses to get leather or imitation leather for this purpose.

heh, i tried making one out of the remnants of some ugg boots that my boxer half ate, my finger tips ended up bloody. lol. im making this for a busse hellrazor till i can get a custom one made. just temporary, the duct tape and cardboard ill look into. i dont have a heavy duty stapler unfortunately :(
