Has anyone here ever tried this stuff? I've heard from Aussies that it is great, but a lot of Americans seem to hate it. What does it taste like?

Thanks.

My former graduate advisor was a Ozzie and a great Vegemite fan. To me it tasted like a mixture of soy sauce and axle grease.

I'll second the axle grease taste... I tried it back around 1974. I do believe you could pack your car's bearings with that stuff! :D

Americans are not genetically capable of enjoying the benefits of Vegemite.

My wife has been here for ten years and still hates it. That's all the proof I need.

;)

Similar to marmite in the UK isn't it? If so I like it hehe
And Twiglets which taste similar yum.

Vegemite is living proof that, with a little imagination, you can market anything. It's base ingredient is a by product of beer production. I can imagine some executives sitting around a boardroom table in sydney one day....

"Hey you blokes, we've got this excess yeast extract that we are just pouring down the drain. Let's put it in bottles with a bit of flavouring and market it as a health food! We'll convince every Mum in Australia that it's good for their kids and make millions!"

If you haven't tasted it - highly concentrated soy sauce with the texture of grease is a good description.

Not bad when you spread in thin on toast however.....and they say in the adds that it's good for you.....

Marketing? I can remember we used to siing this song in school...

The Happy Little Vegemite Song

We are happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be,
We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea,
Our mummy says we're growing stronger every single week,
Because we love our Vegemite,
We all adore our Vegemite,
It puts a rose in every cheek!

Thin??? Don't be ridiculous, a good THICK layer with plenty of butter on a nice freshly toasted slice of thick homemade bread with a good cup of tea. What could be better than that?

Besides, it has heaps of vitamin B, just what you need the morning after that heavy night on the turps!

I guess it is an acquired taste. I don't know any Americans that admit to liking it.

Conversely, every Ozzie I have known that spent any time in New Mexico has gotten hooked on green chile.

Most people i know like a good dose of chilli.

Vegemite on toast and a cup of tea for brekky.
A pie or two with sauce and a beer for lunch.
A pile of chilli and a glass or two of good Oz red for dinner.

That's the way to go.

Mind you, a steady diet like that can often produce "interesting" bodily functions!

Vegemite is not a taste that can be aquired - A Vegemite sandwitch is forced into every Australian kids lunchbox from the moment they start school. The silver spoon kids get a slice of cheese thrown in the mix. If you weren't brought up with this salty yeast product, the taste can't be aquired, at best just tolerated.
BTW, I reckon its the ducks nuts thickly spread on fresh toast with loads of real butter, fine Aussie tucker.

Vegemite is for sissies....

Real guys eat...

I ALWAYS- ALWAYS have a jar of Marmite in the fridge. Nothing better with soft-boiled eggs & toast. Adds to a gravy or sauce.
What's up w/ you sissies? ;)

It's like the bees knees, but for duck lovers. :D

I've been living in New Zealand for almost a decade now. I've tried it once a long time ago when I first came here, just to see what everyone's talking about.

I tried it once.

You have it in the fridge, that's sacrilege man. Marmite should never be refrigerated! :D

I've tried Vegemite. It was like someone took every weed out of a lawn/garden and boiled it down into a concentrated paste. :barf: Vegemite is the SPAM of the vegetable world. All the crap left over that nobody wants all put together and is somehow unexplicably sold to gullible people who think it's food.

Somebody tell the Ozzies to keep their vegemite to themselves. If they start shipping it over here, we will start shipping them.......SCRAPPLE!

Come on now, when you put vegimite and nutella on in equal portions then the fun really begins!
