You might think it was a bit difficult to mislay a 2,000 ton wooden warship - and Hasn't the Victory been sealed in a dry dock in Portsmouth since 1922?

Ah, but there have been no fewer than seven HMS Victory's (HMS Victories?), of which Nelson's famous final flagship was the sixth.

Anyway, the celebrated three-decker's immediate predessessor sank in a storm near the Channel Islands in 1744 and has been missing ever since. An American company, Odyssey Marine Exploration, has located the wreck, which apart from it's enormous archaeological significance, is believed to hold no less than one billion dollars in gold!

Read all about it

175' long, 110 cannon, 1000crew ! I wonder if it went down because of overloaded condition. There certainly were ships that did.
Those pompous gov'ts !! The divers put up all the money , take all the risk and the gov'ts say 'mine, mine , all mine " !

I like the part where the Admiral, who was impugned for poor navigation, was now cleared, as the wreck was 60miles away from the Casquets (the rocks where he supposedly ran into).

The Casquets lighthouse keeper was courtmartialed for not having the light on. One justice served, and another mislaid. :grumpy:

Good find!

Britania rules the waves! at least it did then.
Actually, Britain was still an upstart little island on the edge of Europe in 1744. The Major naval powers were Holland, France and Spain. Britain was climbing fast though and became a major power after the Year of Victories in 1759.

There should be a "statute of limitations" that apply to governments too, If the government couldn't find it, Tuff Shit! Don't sit back and wait for someone else to do all the work then step up and whine Mine!Mine!Mine! Bunch of greedy SOB's! And that goes for ALL governments. It's been 265 years for Christ's sake!!!!!!!!!
