Hoback Regrets

Hey everyone, I bought my first Hoback (I know, I know 😅) a couple of weeks ago.. a Sumo. I've wanted one since they were released and they finally came in stock here in Canada. Anyways, I'm having regrets. The button stick on it is atrocious. Sometimes its ok but other times it's crazy stiff - especially when flicked with some force. I've opened and closed it probably a thousand plus times and if anything, it's become worse. I planned to keep it longer, hoping it would break in.. however I noticed what seemed to be rust on the blade (see pic). I sent it back to the store to be exchanged for another - however, they're saying there'll be a large restock fee (as it's been used and once lightly sharpened). They're saying the button stick is normal and that it wasn't rust and is now gone. Thoughts¿? Cheers guys

Looks like it could be rust to me, but I’m not even close to being an expert, maybe it is something else. Not my kind of knife at all, but if the lock stick bothers you, and they say it’s normal, I probably wouldn’t want to trade it for another one. Again, that’s just my thoughts on it.

Get yourself a tube of Fritz and a qtip. That rust just be gone in a few. Just dont go ham with it since it still an abrasive.

This thread may be of some relevance...

Things like lock stick are an immediate return for me. It should function correctly from the factory. I paid for a correctly manufactured product. It isn't a car, or a pair of jeans, I shouldn't have to "break it in" or whatever. If I really like the knife other than that one issue, before use I will take it apart and see if it is an easy to fix issues. I've noticed lately that manufacturers are using some sort of lube that is viscous and really attracts dust. A thorough cleaning and oiling/lubing has helped two knives I have.

As for the rust, I suspect that it has something to do with the blasted finish in the blade cutout. My Sumo has also shown surface rust in this area (in the center of the cutout where my finger contacts). The surface rust cleaned off easily, but I've started to oil the blade after use. I've heard that some blasted finishes create much more surface area to allow moister to pool and rust to form - perhaps even M390 is not immune.

See if you can contact the manufacturer who made it. The time zone and language barrier from the folks in Guangdong may be an issue.
I just got up off the floor from ROFLMAO
Caveat Emptor comes to mind ...

Image appears to show surface rust (probably could be wiped fairly easily).
If knife was returned as purchased, I would demand full refund.
If user had actually "sharpened/used" consider paid vs perceived value vs real-value since the Hoback stink thread of 1QT'22
Retailer has significant liability related to link above. (IMHO)
