Back hiking in the Northeast and summer seems to finally be here.

Honeysuckle

Crown Royal Possibles Bag

Something new from Vargo …
Flask funnels suck, this is the coolest idea I have seen yet, but I don’t get out much!

I made a larger Hobo Stove from a GIANT can of Green Beans…

The Menu…

Those travel bottles are good for carrying olive oil inside…

The screen I had over the top is great for warming up tortillas…!

Yummy!

Coffee and Pecan Pie!

After the fire dies down, the coals are good for keeping things warm.

Project time…

But first…a spider!

Mora #2/0 (3” blade)

I got these two rubber bands in Georgia, before I left. I kept them in my pocket and deposited them into my pack for the next days’ hike trip in NJ. I used them to make some tongs.

I try to set a fire-lay for the next time I come to my camp, or for anyone who stumbles upon my camp in need of a quick fire, who may be hypothermic…in the summer!

My water source is drying up by the day…
I had to use the trickle from a nearby brook.

I got back to camp (the next day) and saw my old friend…

I acquired this new “piece of kit” from a thrift shop.

I think it may be part of the old Boy Scout mess kit?

Naturally, the tab came off my can of beans and I had to resort to the old school SAK.

My little pail never had a lid and took longer to boil, so I had to do the right thing and buy some Danish cookies…for a lid!

Strange pattern on my hatchet. I’ve had this for about 4 years, but it has been in the forest for a year, just hidden under some brush.

ANYONE know what the heck this it?

Dinner!

Awesome. Always enjoy your threads. Man if I could get out a quarter of the amount as you I'd be happy. I like your idea of setting a fire lay for the next guy....how thrilled I would have been a few times after a long, arduous hike and there was already a lay there ready to be lit!!

man, that burrito looks damn tasty!

That's the idea. Something that has been in practice in cabins, shelters, camps, etc., for those who may need it. Also, to make it easier to get some coals started the next time. It can also be covered with plastic for the next trip, especially if it will be a while!
I also have been leaving boiled water in pail too!

Good idea, then we'll get to the bottom of this!

Strange pattern -- plastics and rubber can deteriorate after some time even after years of perfect service. I just replaced all the foam in the seats of my pickup truck !! .Polyurethane has a history of doing this. Depends on the polymer and the additives. UV is also noted for ruining things .Outdoor things need UV protection additives .
Those micro-cracks can make for a brittle material !

That's a Golden Orb Spider ! One day early going east on I 84 in CT -backlit by dew on the web, by the rising sun .I saw a web , then another, then hundreds more all on the shoulder , seen at highway speed !! I didn't have to look at them there were so many !

Thanks for the great info. I do keep this outside in a brush pile. It works fine still. Even the tin & duct tape sheath works has this pattern.

That pattern on the hatchet looks like you could end up being Patient Zero of the Zombie Apocalypse.

Awesome post RB. I don't even drink in the field, I usually have my young daughter with me... but damn I like that flask! Nice hobo stove! Looking at the coffee and pecan pie it looks like you have picked up some good habits while visiting the deep south :D The tongs look great, I should make some of those the next time I fry bacon in the woods :) The spider is beautiful. I have never seen any of the orchard spiders down this way. I like that you leave the fire lay to aid any would be summer time sufferers of hypothermia, you have a good energy about you.

Thank you Brian.
Yes, picked up some awfully good and some dreadfully bad habits there!
this flask was empty, I just needed to get some field photos of it. Heck, you can fill it with water or juice if you like.
Nobody is getting hypothermia in my camp!

I'm afraid your hatchet has been zombie-fied! I love that camp that you have setup, nice place to escape to

nice bit of gear. If I needed a flask, that would certainly be an option. So far, my old Nalgene plastic one is working well.

Lol, very easy to pick up dreadfully bad habits down here, particularly in the dietary areas. I like the idea of the flask because a) I have an inexplicable love for titanium...I really can't say why... and I like the idea of having a flask of brandy for winter outings just because it reminds me of winter hunting trips with my grandfather as a kid. So if I'm going to get a flask I want a good one...and I know pretty much nothing about them. I looked at a Stanley flask at Dick's Sporting Goods the last time I was there and almost bought it, but it's like 100F with the heat indexes here right now so I have other gear priorities to tend to for the moment. Lol, I like your attitude :)

Its funny you mention that. About a year ago I was actually looking to get the same Vargo titanium flask as bearthedog. When I went in to my REI to look for it they didn't have it but they did have the Stanley Classic flask. After fondling it for several minutes it really grew on me and I ended up buying it. I like the shape of it and the mouth is slightly bigger than a normal flask for easy filling (albeit not as easy as the Vargo I'm sure) but it also saved me about 50 bucks too lol. Took it home, wrapped in camo tape, and its been riding in my hunting pack ever since. Warmed my belly up on a few of those cold morning hunts too ha ha.

Nothing special. Usually Old No. 7 or maybe some Johnnie Walker when I'm lucky enough to get it gifted from a family member during Christmas or something. I'm not a big drinker at all but sometimes you just need some fire in the belly on those cold, foggy mornings while sitting up in a tee stand or for a celebratory toast after finally dropping a nice buck for the year.
