Hog Farming Question

I friend just told me that a friend just told her that hog farms are set up in tiers and that you only have to feed the hogs on the top tier. The lower hogs eat the excrement of the hogs above them. To me, this sounds like an urban legend or the PR from a radical animal rights group. Could this possibly be true?

Not true at all.
I bet she's a vegan, trying to turn people off eating meat

Smaller farms like have been around forever just have hogs in a feed lot where they can roam around at will. They don't necessarily have a ton of room, but they aren't stacked on top of each other by any means. Feed is usually provided in a long trough that all the hogs in a pen can feed from at once.

Large (factory) farms sometimes have a stacked system, but it is not hogs on top of hogs. The hog pens are built over a trap that all the waste falls into, rather than building up inside the pen. The trap is then drained into a lagoon to be stored until it can be spread.

I can't even imagine where people get such ideas about hogs being fed hogshit  Its usually been cooked up by some peta/vegan/weirdo type though :grumpy:

Nope, not true at all. What really happens is the top tier buys a new Fusion Steel Heart, then sells their Ergo SH's to the second tier, who then sell their beater SHII's to the third.....

I posted my question five minutes after my friend told me this. After thinking about it, it seems so obviously silly I'm embarrassed that I asked it.

I would not sweat it. Any of us can be taken when we simply do not take the time to think about something. This is how many political groups of all persuasions take us on many matters.

BTW, I have never been a hog farmer, but have never seen multi level hog barns.

Nothin wrong with asking, I'm glad to see you questioned it :D
I'm no hog farmer either, but know more than a handful of folks who are. Had to sit through a demonstration or two on factory farms also

If you are a hog, it really doesn't matter whether you are on the top or the bottom, the outlook ain't good.

Not quite true... Hogs have the AK-47 to look forward too :D
