I am trying to find a hog hunting knife that has a double edge. I looked at the ka-bar big brother and was wondering if it had a sharp edge on the back side other than the serrated edge. Any suggestions of hog knifes that are not pricy but will get the jog done

Tanto 1245, it's basically a kabar dagger. Has large back swedge portion, about 3/4 of the back side could be sharpened.

i like that knife but im looking for a knife that would be a little longer (10 inch blade) and has the original kabar look

TO MY KNOWLEDGE, There are no current production Kabars that fit that description. They do make a Stacked Leather Handled version of the tanto fighting knife but it's even shorter, has more of a drop point tanto design that I don't care for and no swedge on the spine to speak of.

And a nice little model #6476 aptly name the "Pig Sticker", stamped with Union Razor Co. markings. But it's even shorter (and a limited edition collectable, only 500 made.) Also, it definitely doesn't share any handle traits identifiable with the fighting utility Kabars of fame. They're going for $189+free shipping on ebay right now.

The 1245 ($62,free shipping@amazon) does retain that classic kabar look and feel in the grip and pommel, just with a modern material and at 8", they're already pushing it out longer than other fighting models.

IF IT IS classic "Kabar Styling" you seek, in the Stacked Leather Handle while still keeping your applications in mind, another option for you might be an M3 trench knife, here's the link to a vid showcasing one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2DW9eXV_Is but it is not produced by Kabar, this one in particular is by Ontario, ($46.79+Free Shipping at Amazon.) But I don't own one and can't speak for the strength of it's tip.

I do however own a 1245 tanto and know that the tip is VERY well supported, great for piercing and I wouldn't expect it to break if I managed to strike bone with it.

If stabbing and cutting of arteries is your goal, Pick one of the above; 8" is plenty.

Apologies if my post seems blunt, Just trying to share a large amount of information and help you out with your quest in the most condensed way possible, I really don't intend to be. Happy Hunting! :D

Nice Eye! ;)

I'ts built like all KA-BAR knives, I know that moose recommended one poster to go for it's purchase, so I don't doubt the blade at all.

The Big Brother looks to be a solid knife, you could probably even process your pig with it, using serrated portion as a hack saw, if need be.

If your ONLY purpose is to bleed out your pig, then it seems like a little bit of heavy overkill to walk around with on your belt to me but If that's what you really want and you're looking at it to do a little more than just bleed out your pig then go for it.

I've never held one in my hand but it has a nice clip point and ample (potentially sharpened) swedge to serve it's purpose of penetrating and severing arteries, my only recommendation is not to stab too far past the serrated portion of the blade.

To quote Encyclopædia Britannica: A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, Literature and General Information, Volume 27-
"The ends of a torn artery retract, coil up within the external coat and prevent haemorrhage. The arteries contract when mechanically irritated and remain contracted for a long time after excision..."

Which gives water to W.E. Fairbains Statement on Use of the Knife that "It is essential that the blade have a sharp stabbing point and good cutting edges, because an artery torn through (as against a clean cut) tends to contract and stop the bleeding."

Serrated edges would be, in my opinion, a great cause for the "mechanically irritated" arteries mentioned in Encyclopædia Britannica to coil up and clamp off.

I'm sure they're are other opinions out there, but those are statements based in medical science.

If you're only concern is quality, It's a KA-BAR. With a little proper care and maintenance, It'll keep rocking long after you do! :D

That said, I offer one final suggestion that I admire as a good mix of killing and utility (just to make sure you have researched all options.) Take a look at the Kabar 1271 "Fighter" but if your hearts desire is a Big brother, get a Big Brother bc you'll end up doing it eventually ;)

I have nothing negative to say about the Big Brother other than a lack of baton-ability and it's size (which you admire.) Buy Your blade man, it calls to you.

Here's a link to a short review of one on this forum:

I have seen Tooj mention when someone complained about the 1217's lack of sharpened swedge was.......use a file.
seriously 20 minutes with a nice new file and your done.

BK5.

That is also A HIGHLY legitimate response, but mans lookin for something nearly twice as long :/

Great job on pointing it out though, can't believe I missed that one! I definitely love the profile of the BK5.

The BK5 has an 8" Blade, which makes it only 2" shy of his wants. ;) The BK15 [short trailing point] is half the size.

Frankly, I think 8" Is plenty. But then again, I don't hunt hogs nor do I know their anatomy. So maybe 10" is more ideal. IMO The BK5 would do if 8" is okay.

Cold steel Trailmaster. This year it will be produced in O-1 steel!!! The clip is sharpened already, but you could reprofile it and make it razor sharp without too much trouble.

Thanks! I got my Beckers mixed up! :P

I think 8" is plenty myself, I'd be willing to bet it could take down anything on this planet if stuck in the right place.

No worries, I do the same thing. The reason I can keep that one straight, is because I lust after it. :foot:

I read through this post and I thought of this:

I think it would be excellent for your purposes.

Good idea, I bet it would work great. To bad, it's not a Ka-Bar.

Just ordered one of these last night for 40 bucks, brand new. It's from a Canadian company but they would ship to the US I am sure.

Apparently it's a swiss bayonet, but aftermarket handles are added. Here's a video of an actual swiss bayonet showing the size and he talks a bit more about the steel and length and such. Review starts at around 6 minutes.
