Ok guys, lets see some pics of those HOGFSHLE's. I am confused at a recent sale and the description of the slabs. Am I missing something regarding the Tiger pattern micarta? Is there Tiger Stripe and Tiger Hide or are these terms being confused? I know I am getting confused. Basically show what you have so I can get this straight in the old noggin.

see here...I believe sentinels is "hide" , and jeffery's is "stripe"...

That's the thing, I don't think there is a difference other than semantics. The one for sale is oiled up and the one Jeffery has is dry as a bone. If he soaked his in oil, they would most likely look the same or darned close.

I think we need a shop clarification, as a collector I would really appreciate a definitive answer to the "hide" vs. "stripe" issue. :)

Maybe this only adds to the confusion, but here is the description of the Flying Nuclear MOASH from the big man himself.

“…They feature Tiger Hide grips, a recurved blade, and "flying" angled serrated teeth along the forward sweep of the cutting edge.”

Here is the picture sent in the email.

Here are the pictures supplied by some of the piglets :D that scored one of these beasts.

If anyone doesn't want their picture here, let me know.

To me the "hide" and the "skin" look the same. The only variation I see is that some of the tiger looks a good deal more tan and some looks to be more of a red brown, but this might also be dependant on the photo editor they use. I know if I monkey with mine in the wrong way, handle colors can change.

Here is a pic of my NuclearMOASH next to a HOG's FlyingNuclear, with the Tiger Hide, just to add another pic for the sake of reference, still doesn't quite answer the question though...

Good goin' Porkgunner. I called the shop and Garth says you da man...he's coming to give the final word....

OK fellas lets see if I can clear this up.
The correct term is Tiger hide. However the item in question that is being referred to as Tiger Stripe is in fact the same material as Tiger Hide.

Tiger hide micarta is essentially a layered canvas micarta containing black canvas, a tan colored canvas and resin. Now here's where it gets tricky. The tan canvas, with age, can darken. So we can see a variation of tones in the tan canvas which is what is causing the confusion. All tigerhide micarta starts out the same way.

Also as Progunner pointed out, by oiling the handle you can darken the material, and to throw another loop at you guys, I have found that different oils will also produce different shades.

Tigerhide, like any other multi layered material, can and will have varying shades of color. We have the same thing with our snakeskin micarta. With age, oil and depth of grinding or machining you will get many different variations.

This all adds to the mistique of these materials as every knife truelly has its own special look.

I hope this helps clear a little bit of the confusion. Of course I may have just made it worse.

Anyway to sum up this post, Tiger hide and Tiger stripe, as it has been called elsewhere, are the same material however appearance of said material can vary.

Too much typing I need a drink,
Garth

You're da freaking man Garth, now go get some libation and then back to the grinder with you. :D

So... Now the question for me is what oil do I need to put on my handles to make them look darker like in the pic sent out in the email?

Thanks Garth - that is really good info...now I'm gonna have to start experimenting with different oils! ...there's a Castle Megastore around here somewhere :D

Guys this is the actual HOGFSH.

I dried the Micarta handles and took some pics of it, the oil i used was baby oil, no color in it!:D And it wear off when you wipe it a couple of times with a piece of cloth.;)

Can some one post some pics of a other LE HOGFSH so we can solve this mystery.

When i oil it up it gets a red color, like on the pics of the knife on ebay.

i have an sjtac that has snakesin, and when dry look like the standard snakeskin, but when oiled the "tan" goes away and it looks just like tiger hide.
i will try to do pics and post them, but i can never get them to post right.

here are the pics. when i got this blade, it was stripped, but the blade was all ground up. i polished it to mirror, didn't like it, and took it back to satin. the scales looked like tigerhide when i got it. when i washed it down after the blade work, i saw it was snakeskin. the tan goes away when wet or oiled on this one. the first pic is dry, the second oiled.
