Well I think there are enough of us interested here in establishing a clearer definition of what it means to be a HOG and/or PIGLET to warrant another attempt at definning the two. We still have many people who do not really know their standing here. Some do not care while others can feel left out. This is an awesome community here and this thread is merely to further help the community grow closer. :)

For reference I used the link provided in one of the "stickies" to see what has been said before.

It is a great thread but the number of knives you posess seems to be the main factor in ones status. From more recent posts I have read regarding this it would seem that, while the number of knives you have does factor in, there are other factors such as willingness to help out, sharing knowledge, use of knives, etc... that also come into play.

So if we were to difine just HOG and PIGLET, to avoid to many classifications and include everyone, what do you feel are imortant factors for each?

PIGLET:
  • Has at least 1 chunk of INFI.
  • Desire to learn about INFI and Busse knives in general.
HOG
  • Has at least one chunk of INFI.
  • Has used their INFI (to what degree is not so important).
  • Helps Piglets, and other HOGS, with questions and information.
  • Shares knowledge on such things as sharpening, stripping/cleaning up INFI, uses for knives, etc...
  • Seeks to make the Busse Combat forum a home away from home.
  • Helps Tyrkon find a CG SFNO at show prices. :p:p:p
These are just ideas. What says you guys and gals?

Note: as we develop definitions of these two we need also to think of how to determine how to actually determine which of the two classifications people fall in. Vote? Petition? etc... Or do you like things the way they are?

This is not the same thing as being "Inducted" by BOSS HOG himself. But as TonyG pointed out, Jerry is a busy man and can not possibly know all the going ons here.

Or can he?

I am certainly a newbie and piglet at best, but I think a true HOG should have some INFI time under his/her belt.

I've seen a lotta posts recently about this, and I gotta say...

It really doesn't matter how you see yourself. How do OTHERS see you? Are you a good person with a love for the Busse experience? I could call myself a HOG til I'm blue in the face, but if the community thinks I'm not worthy... Then I'm not worthy. If we start a ranking system, or dividing us up into 'classes", then are we still united as a community? What does one contribute to the to the group? If it's knowledge, humor, good spirits, a willingness to get along and accept 'traditions' rather than try to change the ways that attracted most of us to Busse Combat and their Forums, & a love for the Trough and the knives that are some of the best on the planet, That's HOGgish... How many knives does it take to be a HOG? Could be as few as 2 in my eyes if you are a genuine positive influence to the community around here...

When I first came 'round here, I was of the thinking that the system of rank had more to do with your time put in... I kinda saw it like this.

Pork rind = Newbie... 1 to a few knives, learning the ropes.

Piglet = Been around for a half year +/-, owns a few knives, can answer common questions easily enough.

HOG = Been around for a year plus, may still own only a few knives, but strives to collect preferred certain types when possible, has learned a considerable more knowledge of Busse and the knives they sell. Has been tapped by the Boss.

STEALTH HOG = Same as above, rarely seen, INFI disappears when they are around. Usually known only by the tracks they leave behind. :)

UBERHOG = Has been around for years, knows most about all things Busse, Owns some really rare and/or seriously nice customs that the rest of us have only heard of, and helps us with the 'obscure' but still important information. Good role models for the rest of us.

BOSS HOG = Owns Busse Combat, rules our world, knows all, but may not remember thanks to JWB ;) :D:thumbup:

Great points Jaxx. So are you saying we should not have HOGS or PIGLETS or anything. Just INFI-holics?

If I said that... I'd be trying to change traditions, and that's not for me to try... I'm just a piglet in Boss HOG's world! ;) :D

IMO, "how others see you" is too subjective. The last thing it should become is a popularity contest. And if it is going to be subjective, then it should be based only on the opinion of the oldest HOG of all time, Jerry.

Also, the Stealth HOG category does not fit in at all. By definition, one doesn't even notice they are there, except for the fact that INFI seems to be disappearing inexplicably. How do you choose someone to be a stealth HOG when you hardly even know they are there???

Lets get to the important stuff!

Tito's on sale at Costco!... $15 and change:eek:

I guess I see 3:

Piglet
Hogs
Inducted Hogs

I like the above quote and the whole "character more important than steel".

Uh oh! I forgot about the drinking factor.:p Good point. Now can one be a HOG if they do not drink?

A "straight edge" HOG! :p

I agree that a popularity contest is not the way to choose, but then again, it IS a factor in a sense... Is one a good person, or not? Does this person contribute something positive to the community... or not? Those who do will gain friends, or friendly attitudes, thus increasing their 'popularity', those who don't, won't. Know what I mean? I'm sure folks here can tell the difference between genuine good guys (& girls), and those who may fake it, and also those who are just here to gain something without returning anything worthwhile.

My post isn't on what I think should be, but rather what it seemed to be to me as I learned "the ropes"... Same applies for "stealth HOG"... which, to me, also seemed to be defined by one who does most of their trading/buying/selling "behind the scenes". To me, a "stealth HOG' is well... A HOG variant... Jerry might know about them, but for us they are like an urban INFI legend, LOL. :)
