Anyone have some experiences with the Hogue Deka whancliffe they could share?

I'm (hopefully) going to be picking up a Deka tomorrow. I'm usually a wharncliffe guy because of the types of tasks I do at work... But the compound grind has me second guessing myself.

How has sharpening gone for you? I use an Edge Pro most of the time and the compound grind looks like it would be a hassle.

Anyone have both the drop point AND wharncliffe? How do they compare?

I gave my cousin a wharncliffe deka two years ago for his birthday. The compound grind is mild, he said sharpening hasn't been an issue. However, he touches it up regularly and has had to do any major sharpening on it.

Ive placed a deka in my shopping cart a few times but always become uncertain of which blade shape i want so i havent followed through with a purchase. So ill be keeping an eye on this thread and maybe ill be swayed as well.

I believe it drops at 10am today. It looks like a really sweet knife, I've never had a Deka before. I'd jump on it but I've bought way too many knives lately.

I have a deka with wharncliffe blade. I sharpen it on a guided sharpener by stopping at the grind change and continuing on the second grind. Sharpening free hand is almost like sharpening two straight edges. I run one part of the grind along the stone then switch to the next.

It all sound like more work than it is. It’s really no big deal. As time goes on I’d probably just sharpen the edge on a guided system as one continuous edge. As you can see there’s not much of a transition between the two edges.

I have both their american flag ones lol. If you do any kind of food cutting, apples, steaks, picnics, etc the clip is the way to go. In terms of pure utility for boxes, opening stuff, stabbing something, the warncliff wins.

Hope this helps

Edit: also, I'd wait for the uncoated version...I'm thinking one will be around soon. For Magnacut, that coating is purely aesthetics

I have had the wharncliff version for a while now and it’s only needed to be stropped to get back to original sharpness. So far I like Houges treatment of 20CV the best.
I’m tempted to get the drop point Deka in magnacut.

Yea, that was my only hesitation. I ended up holding off because I didn't want to have to blast the blade to remove the coating, and then reprofile it. Hopefully SMKW releases an uncoated version at some point. :)

I have two clips and one wharncliffe and they are all nice. I really like the version 2 with less screws and lowride pocket clip. I had to call a few dealers as most haven't updated their pictures online and didn't know they were changing from Hogue. You can still find dealers that have them at last year's pricing as well. Some dealers did raise prices in January and these went up another $20. A big dealer in Louisiana is where I got my last one a month ago and they list at the old price. I called and made sure I got the newer version. Great knives for sure! Love the Able lock over the axis.

I'm in the same boat. I planned on getting one, until I dropped $625 last night on the exchange for a Hinderer project x.

I have both. In 20cv. When I ordered the Magnacut version, I got the warning. I think it is easy to sharpen and really like it. That said the clip point is nice. I haven't bought a clip point in decades as all the knives that the tip broke off were clip points.

I like CPM20CV. That stuff holds an edge better than baby poop stuck in a diaper. I actually find 20CV easy to sharpen if you keep up on it and do not let it get completely dull.
I prefer spear point style. But between drop and wharncliffe I will usuallly choose drop. But Wharncliffe tips are generally stronger.

Slightly off topic, but is Magnacut any better than 20CV for a folder?

Assuming a good heat treatment, 20CV should offer better edge retention. However, MagnaCut should be significantly tougher and a little more resistant to corrosion. Of course, 20CV is already stainless enough to be in the zero care club for me. The extra resistance with MagnaCut is nice in theory but probably won't ever actually matter for me. My folders don't really see "hard use" either. Where MagnaCut might have a noticeable advantage is in quicker sharpening and better stropping, but I don't have the experience to know for sure.

At least in my head, I've been viewing MagnaCut like a better version of 14C28N. That's a steel I really like in budget knives and I like it for the same sorts of reasons.
