The EX01 is a great knife but I was surprised to find out that the horizontal grooves on the knife are for show rather than grip. I emailed Elishewitz regarding the grooves and he responded that the horizontal grooves are for aesthetic purposes.

I'm curious if the horizontal grooves on Benchmade aluminum handles are also just for looks.

it could be to lessen the weight. from what I saw on the knife the choil makes it look like it shouldnt slip around too much but idk. if its just for looks it kinda makes me nervous

When you say horizontal, are you talking about the ridges going lengthwise on the aluminum handled versions? If so, I suppose they're for aesthetic purposes in that most of the grip comes from the grooves on the spine of the blade & edges of the handle.

Look at your typical Sebenza. No grooves, but it's not a slippery knife.

Also, if you look at the G-Mascus handled versions, the texturing's much different on the handles, but the same on the edges of the handles.

Regardless, they are well built knives.

if you want improved grip, work on the edges of the handle, more than the sides. That's where most of the contact is, IMO.

I agree. I looked over my Hogue much closer today (Carrying it, in fact) & have to say the grip comes from all of the jimping on the handle & blade spine.

If the grooves on the side of handle are that much of an issue, then why just do one side as it seems common to do?

Anyways, I wouldn't worry about it & I honestly don't understand why it'd make one nervous &/or bother anyone. If it's slippery, I can understand, but I don't consider the Hogue slippery.

Now, admittedly, all of my experience with the Hogue is the aluminum handled version, not the G-Mascus one (Which has different texturing). I am expecting one hopefully tomorrow, though.
