I'm contemplating a Hogue EX01 4" Drop Point. I'm wondering which of you guys have experience with it and pros vs cons?

I've read about blade play.

I've not made up my mind if aluminum is better than the G-mascus.

The lock is incomprehensible to me.

It's not a super pricey knife but hovering at close to $200 and not being able to handle one, I'd hate to buy it, then not like it.

Anyone with recommendations will you plz share them briefly? :)

I have a 3.5" in the g-mascus and absolutely love it. No blade play issues and it's very smooth. I want to get the 4" drop point in aluminum next; just haven't gotten around to it. Have you seen the videos on youtube? They are pretty good. It's a quality knife and I found a site that has the 4" in aluminum for $135. $200 is way too much.

That's what I'm going for - the 4" model but not sure about the handle. I've watched the videos of Allan but I never got a feeling for which one was a better hande.

I think with the aluminum, the blade rides against the handle and with the g-10 there's that metal plate - or something .. ah dunno..:(

Better watch the videos again.

I have the 3.5 and 4 in G-Mascus. The 4" is better balanced than the 3.5. Both are slightly blade heavy but the 4" is one of my favorite folders today. Period. I've heard some say the Aluminum version is slight better balanced than the G-Mascus models but I still prefer the G10 material anyway.

Highly recommended! The edge on both of mine came 90% polished even - everything on these knives is approaching custom quality and both mine NEVER had side to side or vertical blade play. Rock solid lockup on both while the action is so smooth the blades flick open with nary an effort. It's actually impressive how smooth mine are with zero blade play.

I bought the 3.5" aluminum drop point and immediately got rid of it. Fit and finish, blade grinds, etc, were all VERY good. Impressive good. My issues were handle was small for even my little hands (the low thumbstud cutout forces a low grip) and the lock would sometimes engage inadvertently (maybe it could have been tightened).

It was a nice knife, but just didn't do it for me. Perhaps I'll get the 4" model down the road. The presence of a safety on a manual folder is still a bit mind boggling to me....

I have the 4" G-mascus Tanto. Like it a lot.
Hasn't had a lot of use, but it feels like it would handle almost any task you put it too.
No blade play on mine.
I found the detent to be less than I like, but apparently Im in the minority, most find it perfectly adequate.

Thanks guys. trix2004 - good review. I think I'll probably pass on this one. I didn't realize it had such a short handle until the shot of side by side with the ZT 0301 (identical in length) and too short for me. I'll suffer on and wait with my Military, Resilience, and Recon-1 until an XM-24 comes my way again.

Dumb move selling my XM-24. :(

I really like my 4" tanto with black aluminum scales.

It is a lot of knife for the money. Very impressive fit and finish.

Mine had a little side to side blade play when I first got it, which was remedied once I adjusted the pivot a little. Locks up solid now.

Handle length on the Hogue 4" is slightly longer than the handle length on my Umnumzaan.

I was impressed when I held it and had to add it to my collection.

I have a 4" G-Mascus DP. Top quality, and an excellent value. Had to loctite the pivot screw, but that's pretty common on folders.
