Hogue extrak and extrak xl thoughts?

I see a major lack of personal experience with people using this knife, and nobody around me carries them, so I can't get my hands on one. I see several recommendations for it, but not what anybody has actually used it for, and their thoughts after having used it...outside of it being an accessory.

I decided I wanted a new knife for deer skinning and processing, and the extrak and extrak xl check all the boxes I had in mind. For the 3.3" version, it's .09" which i like the idea of for the skinning part of it, but not sure about the rest of the processing. I've just never used one that thin. I'd love to try it, but spending $150-$170 for a test mule without any feedback and experiences from other people makes me cautious, as I'm a cheap ass. I'll spend on something i know i like, I just don't like spending and not using it. I think the xl would be a safe bet regardless, being .11"

I like a thinner handle for it, as i feel more precise when using it, and I'm more interested in the m4 versions rather than magnacut. I feel like it's getting hard to find thinner grind, good steel fixed blades. Seems like it's all focusing around bushcrafting with a sharpened pry bar, so people can say they batoned their knife, when they had an axe or hatchet they should have used. Or doing some other obscene thing that is better done with a proper tool, just to say they can do it.

Anyway, for anybody that has the extrak or extrak xl, what have you used yours for? I'm especially curious about people that have used them for game processing. I don't need it, as I have plenty of fixed blades and folders I can still use to process, I just want a new toy to use. Thanks for any input.

I have the smaller one in m4. I really like it. Thin and light. I keep it in my "kill kit" along with a kestrel mountain scalpel. I've used the extrak to skin quite a few deer and I use if for harder tasks while skinning bear, around bones and joints and what not. The only thing that has bothered me is the sharpening choil. It likes to catch on hide when skinning.

I have the larger one in magnacut. Beware, the large doesnt come with a sheath. I twisted one up out of kydex for it.

Otherwise, it is thin, slicy and good in the hand although the handle is thin.

I find its overall useability and size very comparable to a CRK Backpacker. I like it.

Thanks for the input. I didn't even think about the choil there. They are one of the things that annoy me on folders. Thinking about it, I'm not sure i have a fixed blade with one. Probably won't sway me away from it, but I'm glad to have that in mind rather than first thinking about it when it catches something. How do you like the 3.3" length for those tasks? The shortest I have for skinning/processing is a 3.625" mora. So not a huge difference, but i just haven't gone quite that short.

Wait, so the larger one just comes with a soft case, and i guess you could call that a blade guard/cover? That's lame. Thanks for the info.

It works for me, but I'm really not a big knife guy. Almost everything I use is 3-3.5" blade unless I'm at home processing game, then I go to a victorinox boning knife.

I think there is some hogue sale going on yet. Be a good time to try one. 😉

The sheath is what ultimately steered me away. Looks like a kitchen knife blade cover
I've decided to go with the 3.3" version, I guess at least it comes with an ulti clip, unlike the xl. If nothing else, maybe I'll get some experience in sheath making. I've already made a knife, so I may as well be self sufficient all around, lol.
