i just bought a brand new ESEE 4 love it had it almost two weeks and for some reason i can not get it to hold an edge very well but when it gets an edge its sharp it just wont hold it? any tips or advise

i carry it on my side and may open a pack of crackers or cut i little limb or two on a tree nothing to much

Sounds like you might have a wire edge. Are you sharpening it and if so, how? A wire edge will be very sharp but will dull quickly. You could try stropping on a leather belt or a piece of cardboard. Lots of good advice on sharpening around these parts.

+1 -- you have a wire edge.
strop the unholy snot out of it to break off the wire, then it'll take and hold an edge.

+2, It sounds like it's a wire edge. Grab an old leather belt and run the knife along belt at about a 20-25 degree angle, flipping the knife over every time so each edge get's an equal swipe. Use very little pressure and make sure to get the whole egde. This should work until you can get a real strop and compound. Do this after every time you sharpen your knife.

Or,you can remove the wire edge by using a ceramic rod and making a pass on each side a few times at a slightly elevated angle.Use a lght touch.

What strop do you recommend buying?

My son's 4 had a very good factory edge. I stropped it a little and got it extremely sharp. It is holding a edge very well after cutting cardboard and opening bags of corn. I agree with the advice given already and think that will solve your problem.

+3 on wire edge...

If in fact stropping doesn't work for you, you may be in need of a resharpening. If so let us know and we can start you on that =)

These guys are all right on the money.
When you are sharpening a knife, it may feel sharp to the touch, but it really just has a small bur that has developed along the edge. You may notice that it feels sharper from one side of the edge than the other. Stropping it will remove this bur, and allow you to see what the real edge is like.
If after the strop it still seams dull, or at least not as sharp as you would like it, then its back to the stone (or what ever your using) for another go.

Keep at it, it takes practice, but you'll figure it out.

Also, like someone above already said, use light pressure on the strop, if you push to hard, the strop can actually round the edge instead of refine it.
