I was out hiking today and decided to play with some tree fungus and fire. The fungus I used came from a dead white birch.I chopped it into a basic cube.
I set a small fire and got the fungus smoldering.

Once the first fire went out I had a burning block of fungus with a great ember.

Next I wandered down the river a ways and set a fire with just the ember from the fungus.

I got to liking the Idea of leapfrogging fires with this piece of fungus so I lit a second fire farther down the river.

I wanted to see how much it had left so I walked over a kilometer back home and set a third fire.

Overall I had this piece of fungus burning for well over an hour and it was still hot enough to light my last fire easily.

Wow that is pretty impressive. Fungus really can be a lifesaver! I will have to get out there and try this, I have a few birch trees around my house.

That is really cool. I haven't tried it with fungus, but the common mugwort leaves work great for holding a coal. Then they can also be easily coaxed into a full flame.

I was quite surprised at how hot it stayed.Even after an hour of running around with it all I needed to do was blow on it and a small flame came to life.
