Holding folder blades

I have made a handle of sorts to hold my blades for grinding and this works well.
The problem I have is that I handfinish (220 grit and up) all my work and was wondering what you guys use to hold the blades.
The blades are only 2 1/2" long and are difficult to clamp whithout getting scratches.

Thanks for the info.

I use an aluminum finishing plane that is locked in the bench vise and the paper is locked on the plane.

This way the blade is being pushed over the paper, instead of the other way around.

Works the best for me.

by the way, something that works well to hold the blade steady, is a piece of hardwood with a pin in it that the pivot hole slides down onto. If you make it with close tolerances, the blade will stay put pretty well. Just clamp the rig in your vise and sand away.

I use a small magnetic chuck (like on a surface grinder)to hold folder blades while sanding, I covered the surface with felt so it wont scratch the blade. The only problem is I have to demagnetize everything when I'm done.

Hope this helps

i cut out 2 folder blades butt to butt and use the opposite one to hold onto while grinding. for hand finishing i have a cheap sears swiveling hobby vise with rubber jaw pads to hold the tangs and dont scratch them.
the vise swivels at any angle so i have the blades point right at me for hand finishing.

hope this helps

Thomas ,
I use a 1 1/2" x1/2 piece of hard wood and glue a piece of leather to it ,when hand sanding I lightly moisten the leather this helps keep your blade from slipping arround and just clamp the blade to this leather covered board with a squeeze clamp also wrapped in leather. Works for me.

by the way I clamp the board in a vice or to my work bench with a C-clamp
