hole in AR blade?

I'm surprised that I never noticed this before, on either of my AR's. It's a tiny hole in the blade to the left and below the STRIDER name and is covered by the liners when opened and closed, but you can see it with the blade partially opened.
What's the purpose of this?

If I am not misstaken. That hole is where the ball in the liner goes when the blade is closed. The ball in the liner and the hole in the blade combined make the blade stay in that closed position.

I think what you are referring to is the Detent Hole. If you look at the liner lock at the tip, where it would line up with the “hole” I bet you can find a small ball bearing. When the knife is closed the ball bearing sits in the detent hole to help keep the knife closed when it is supposed to be. You can do a search and look around, but most current production knives have this. And it’s not really a hole all the way through the blade, just a small divot.

You're right, it looks like it is the detent hole to hold the blade closed. But...it is definitely a hole all the way through the blade. Why wouldn't it be just a "divot" as you said? Curious.

IIRC, a hole all the way through allows for wear much more than just a bump. Could be wrong though.

If you have the worlds smallest thumbs like say, G.I.Joes size then it could be used as a opening device.

A lot of knives, including my Sebenza, have a hole all the way through the blade that's used as a "Detent Hole". Spark has it right. A hole lasts forever.

Well, I guess it's now obvious to me what the hole is for. I'm not sure I agree with the need for a hole all the way through the blade to make it last longer though. It can only wear to the depth of the ball on the liner. If it ever wears to that point, it can't wear any further, so a detent hole needs to be no deeper than the detent ball itself.

"I'm not sure I agree with the need for a hole all the way through the blade "

Why is it that the hole bothers you?
Why would you like to just see a divot?

The hole goes all the way through because a ‘divot’ can fill with crap and not be a divot any longer, while a hole has a ‘crap vent’ on the other side.

It is simply a higher quality of manufacture.

Talk to you soon

I really found this term amusing! I need to add it to my vocabulary - ie. "shut your crap vent."

OK, so I haven't had much sleep lately, but crap vent is really funny. I think.

I'm not sure why, or even if, it bothered me. It just seemed not to make sense. But now that you explained it, it does make sense. I guess I just like to know the reasoning behind design decisions.
Thanks for the explanation Mick.

I'm with Shane, "crap vent" just over-took "pie hole" for favorite come back.:D

Thanks for the explaination, saves me the question when my GB comes.

I stand corrected (and I don't mind, who dosn't like the name "crap vent"), but in my defense I don't own a Strider folder (just looking right now) so I was just going off a hunch.

Are you sure? Neither of my Sebenza's have a detent hole.

I'll go along with Harrydog, I have a Sebenza from late 1997 and it has a divit and no hole.

harrydog & logan5, I just emailed you guys a picture of a torn down Sebenza. FWIW, the birthdate on mine is December 29, 2000.

harrydog & logan5, apology/correction!

After looking at the picture I sent you guys, I decided to field strip mine. I guess I was thinking about another knife, as it just has a dimple, no hole. I don't know what I was thinking of. I just sold a Microtech SOCOM Elite (M/A). Maybe that was what I was thinking about?

BTW, I wonder what year the Sebenza was in that picture I sent you. It certainly has a hole...

I'm not sure of the year on the Seb that you sent me, but the one thing that I notice is that it has the original clip is in the pic, suggesting that it's sometime before 2000 (or so). I'm not exactly sure when the newer pocket clip came out, but some where around there.
