Hey Guys,I have a knifemaking Question. Is a hole saw(1")The way to cut the finger hole for kerambits& finger hole knives?Should I go with a Bi-Metal or Carbide saw? After cutting he hole,How would you roundover the hole?File or some type of bit that would work on drill press?Any help would be greatly appreciated.BTW,I'm using 154 CM Stainless.

Hello Rick,

I'm not familiar with the style of knife that you are talking about, but I had a couple of knives that I had to make a large hole in, and here is what I did.

On the first knife, I drew a hole around a quarter and drilled as much of it out as I could. I then took a jewelers saw and cut the rest of it out, and filed the hole until it was smooth. This was TOO MUCH WORK!

On the second knife I bought a Bi-Metal hole saw made by Blue Mole from MSC, and I had that hole cut in no time flat! I was kicking my self for not getting one to start with.

Picture of the knife with the big hole...

I also tried to use a regular hole saw for wood like you would pick up from walmart, but it got dull before it even started to cut.

I believe that if you go with the Blue Mole, you will have to buy the cutter separate from the arbor.

Hope this helps. -chris

Chris,Thanks buddy!I've been checking out the blue Mol hole saws in the MSC Catalog.I figured this was the most effective way to cut that big of a hole. Thanks for the advice.I'll e-mail you the designs I plan on making.Thanks,Rick.

I stepped drilled such a hole, finishing with a reamer. Clamp it down tightly and drill slowly, so it doesn't take off spinning. To smooth the edges I used a cone shaped and/or a hemispherical or ball shaped mounted stone in a drill press. It worked quickly and made a nice smooth chamfer. The stones are from one of those cheapie sets, and are white in color.

Thanks,Tom.A machinist friend also recommended going with a carbide hole saw,Should my cutting speed be slow?Do I use cutting fluid?I plan on using a mounted stone with my flex shaft to chamfer the inside edge of the finger hole,Hopefully this will give me the results I want.

I didn't make the Stone chamfer part as clear as I might have. The stone is actually slightly larger than the hole, such that it acts as a countersink--seats itself perfectly and gives an even bevel all the way around, automatically. Free handing it with a flex shaft might be less accurate than the drill press.

OK,I see what you are talking about the mounted stone! That would definately be more accurate method than freehanding it with the flex shaft! Thanks for the advice!Rick:D
