You can have a fairly substantial blade stock while still having a slicey knife. Edge may not be as durable perhaps as a saber grind, but with good steel and heat treat it shouldn’t be too chippy.

What are your favorite blade grinds?

I think it does depend on the blade geometry and use; for short, thinner blade, FFG or Sabre grind is nice; for outdoor and 'bushcraft' use, I do prefer true Scandi grind; hollow grind is good for EDC knife with thicker stock blade.

I agree. Some of the newer WE and Civivi are hollow ground and wow! Do they slice!

I do prefer a full flat grind on my larger fixed blades.

I really like the 3/4 grind Strider does when they put a swedge on it. Leaves a little more beef at the tip while still having the benefits of a hollow grind. Which for me is being able to get thinner than a flat grind in less space. 0.19” is my preferred EDC stock thickness, but you can’t get it thin enough with a flat grind.

Contrast this with a Medford Marauder-H drop point. That knife is amazingly thin behind the edge even with the 0.19” blade stock. My problem with it was the tip was like a needle. That’s great in a 3” folder that I expect to treat better. But I do a little prying and probing with my tip at work. I like the Marauder a lot, but it’s just the best example I could think of.

I do love the hollow though for anything that folds. Both these monsters are considerably thinner behind the edge than the ZT 0450 I had a while ago.

That is a sexy hollow grind. Nice.

I like full flat and saber/hollow about the same.

I slightly prefer the full flat, except that for sharpening, the saber/hollow gives a parallel surface for certain sharpening systems to clamp onto without worrying about it being uneven.

A good wide blade with a full flat grind and thinnish stock is about perfect for my everyday needs.

Flat and Saber grinds are my top picks. Thinner flat grinds don't shoulder in dense material, and saber grinds are one of the stronger grinds for fixed blades. I like Hollow Grinds too, just not as much as the first two. There's a reason most production knives have hollow grinds, and I think there is a lot of merit in the design.

A hollow grind is kind of similar to an I beam in a sense, it's stiffer and lighter than a flat grind and has the previously mentioned advantage of being thin behind the edge. Only drawback I've seen is that a thin hollow grind doesn't last well on a rough use knife. They are fine on a folder or small fixed blade though.
