Hey all – I recently picked up a Buck 104 compadre on an impulse buy. Overall, I really like the knife/sheath, but I was thinking that Buck’s choices on this one seems to go against the industry grain a bit. The hollow grind is certainly a great cutter, but most knives of this type typically go with a flat or scandi grind. The choice of 5160 steel is also a bit interesting. It should make for a super strong/tuff steel for sure. But it’s the combo of that steel with the hollow grind that I can’t decide if this the best idea or the worst for an all-purpose camp knife. So, what are your thoughts on a hollow grind knife with spring steel for a camp knife. Is this the best of all worlds or the worst? Does the stronger steel make up for the more delicate grind?

5160 is fine. it is and has been used for knives for a long time from various manufactures. i wouldn't worry about it. buck would not use this steel if they didn't trust it. plus the lifetime warranty
