I was wondering, is a hollow grind applied after a flat grind? I've seen illustrations where it appears the blade flats are parallel, and the only metal removed is from the hollowed out area of the cross section. Wouldn't starting with a flat grind leave a better angle where the transition to the hollow happens (a 'softer' angle when cutting into a thick material and the flats contact)? Here's a really bad MS paint version, exaggerated lines.

I'm sure there's been some that do it that way but the norm is to just hollow grind the blade. Don't make much sense to flat grind it and then hollow grind it. I understand what you're talking about with the grind lines but the thickness of the material comes into play there. Noone with a brain is going to use material so thick it interferes with the function of the knife. Well, I wouldn't think they would anyway! :D
