Hollow grind to height ratio?

I am thinking of adding hollow grinds to my tool belt, but I was just wondering if there was a rough guide on the ratio of radius to grind height to stock thickness. I figure that there is a lot of flexibility to it, not some sort of set in stone ratio, I am just looking for a visually appealing starting point for my 8" contact wheel.

Thanks
George

Great question Unky! I have been contemplating the same thing for a while now. That would be a great resource to have for starting out doing hollows.

........or we could just go for it and indulge in the trial and error method:D

While I have contemplated the F it and dive in approach on a few occasions, I am trying to cut down on my waste:o not that I make a lot to start with. Well that in itself is a problem for me, I am so tight with my steel there is nothing left to experiment with most of the time because I have laid things out to use every available inch of what I have. I will be making a steel order next week, and I actually planned in some experimentation into my order, but I would like to maximize my practice steel all the same.

I honestly can't believe how tight I have become after 4 months of trying to live on $800 a month, it has helped me with my impulse buying though:p lets see how long this tight wad attitude lasts now that i am back to my proper pay rate:D

I believe there is a guide that will tell you that, your 8" wheel should do just fine, thats what i have for now.Its practice once you get that bevel set got to your scribed line finness it along the way. Mr. Bump has a 14" wheel in his arsenal how sweet to do bowies with that!

Just practice on wood paint sticks and see what you can do.

Hi, I use this table to determine the grind height:

Wheel Steel thickness
diameter 2mm 3mm 4mm 5mm 6mm 7mm 8mm
10mm 2.8 3.7 4.4 4.7 5.0 5.4 5.5
25mm 4.4 6.1 7.0 8.2 8.7 9.5 10.1
50mm 6.4 7.8 10.3 11.0 12.8 13.8 16.0
75mm 8.4 11.0 13.0 14.5 16.2 17.4 18.5
100mm 9.6 13.0 15.0 16.8 18.5 20.1 21.8
150mm 12.2 16.4 19.1 21.3 23.0 25.4 27.4
200mm 13.0 18.2 20.8 24.5 25.9 29.3 30.5
250mm 13.8 19.9 24.2 27.7 28.8 32.8 35.2
300mm 15.8 21.6 25.1 29.3 31.6 35.4 37.1
350mm 18.7 23.3 28.5 32.0 36.0 38.3 41.4
400mm 19.9 26.0 29.4 34.8 37.1 42.1 43.7
450mm 20.7 28.6 32.2 36.3 40.4 45.4 46.7

I can't seem to post a proper table with the posting tools, so it is a bit of a jumble. Just follow the sequence of the numbers.
