You could do what I did; spend $1600 on a new grinder and practise, practise, practise.:D
Yep:D having the right tool for the job will definately help. A contact wheel on a belt grinder will make it easier.

thanks for the help guys, This is going to be a hobby i will pursue.. I love it so far. still on number one but have started another and a hatchet. I wished i had started this years ago...

Now at the ripe old age of 37 well you know.. And being on vancouver island it is nice to find something to do while it rains... We get 11 to 14 ft a year..Wettest place in north america

This is what I use for the initial stock removal and finish on a contact wheel. Just saves belts. The wheels just rotate so they are turning up in opposite directions.

that looks kinda neat.. How do you know how close to put them together..

i could build something like that for sure...

What do you mean by a hand grinder? An angle grinder? A hand turned grinder?

Get your knife in a vise or clamped or bolted to something, then use a file and sandpaper backed sticks to do the job.

Just use a piece of shim stock for the final thickness of the rough grind you want to do.

1/2 horse GE reversible motors. 120/240 volt 1725 RPM with 8 inch wheels and also have 6 inch wheels for it. Ware a face shield since it throws the filings up.
