Greetings,
Be gentle....I am new to this interesting hobby and researching/reading everything I can before filling my shop with new tools.

Please advise if the value of owning one of if these type of Hollow Grinder jigs.

I am thinking of building a X, Y and Z axis CNC jig which would mount onto a 10" BEE Grinder.

Any feedback is much appreicatied.

I had an old time knife maker tell me he used to make jigs for hollowgrinding. He said he would have to remake or adjust for every single blade and that after learning to freehand he never went back. I took his advice and skipped the jigs.

For the estimated $500 (as that site states) to build that unit, you could buy ASSLOADS of mild steel bar stock and a smear of decent belts and learn to do it freehand... you just need to dedicate the time to it!
I was frustrated as heck trying to learn how to grind properly, and wasted a lot of raw materials before I got to where I believe I can grind with repeatable, consistent results -- and I'd NEVER trade that experience for a machine that did it for me. What happens if you run into a design that the machine can't fulfill the criterion for? I can do it by hand, or at least the learning curve won't necessarily break me in half now!

.... just my next to worthless input, but mine nonetheless. Good luck in whichever way you choose! This is ALL about the individual, right?

I have personally given the concept of a grinding jig much thought and some experimentation. I can tell you that the movement of the blade blank (or the grinding wheel) necessary to produce a well ground blade, is a complex, compound motion that is very difficult to achieve with any mechanical device except perhaps a full CAM set-up. Certainly the X Y and Z movements that I can control on my milling machine will yield a cutting edge, but not what knife makers would consider a "blade". The jig you reference will certainly make nice lawnmower blades, or planer blades, but curving, tapering, artistic knives; unlikely.

do it free hand. look up some work out there on Jim Siska
thats all free hand baby. good stuff
you can do anything free hand just need some practice. give it a shot like that first. then if after a few months and some good demos and one on one instructions you still stink then go for the big crazy jig

I'm with the majority here, freehand takes more skill, time and attention. I can hardly bring myself to use a tool rest if the occasion calls for it. I look at it as time well spent learning the skills. As Mr.Purple said practice on mild steel bar stock, it will help. My $.02 worth. Good luck! -Matt-

I use a hollow grinding jig to get started, then do the rest by hand....It works for me.....carl

the jig is a homemade one on a Wilton Square Wheel....It takes all of 30 sec. to set up and be ready to go....

Totally OT:
It is clear that several new makers have a serious problem with where to store/carry steel and files. In the past couple of days I have heard of a BUTTLOAD of FILES and now an ASSLOAD of steel.

I know you are young and eager to try all sorts of experimentation, but take it from one of the old guys, "STEEL AND FILES WILL RUIN YOU IF PUT IN THE WRONG PLACES". Now don't start getting all up in arms about me being a bigot, I don't care what you do in your private life, just keep steel and files out of your fun and games.

PS, I'm sure IG and Fitzo will have their opinions, too.

I see it as a consequence of the sociological concept of "inclusion" taking hold as the vocabularies of societal subsets enter the common lexicon.

Would PANTLOAD be acceptable? Although measurements will vary, I think it would be safer and more accomodating. :D -Matt-

Sounds like prison talk to me. Did you new makers do any time in the joint? :)

... oh boy, here we go with the 'generation gap' thing...

You old coots need to get out of the gaslights and move into the age of fluorescents, for crying out loud! I know all this new fangled jargon is making it hard for you to follow, but I promise from here on in I'll type REAL S-L-O-W so's you can keep up.:D

I'M KIDDING!

Before you jump all over me for this, please realize I'm generally uptight about what I say and how I say it. You'll note that, even when I'm utilizing the common tongue, I still maintain proper sentence structure and punctuation. It's one thing to use it in jest, and another entirely to use it and not know there's a difference!

I'm a firm believer in the use and application of vulgarity, however... most likely a genetic flaw.;)

No prison time, and exit-only, btw Bruce!:D

We ol farts stick to Dam, Hell and $hit so we can keep it clean around here.

No "PANTLOAD" sounds too sissy like :)

Point taken, Bruce... I'll try and keep it clean.

Unless I'm referring to Fitz or IG. Then 'no-holds-barred', right?;) :D

WHAT THE HECK DID HE SAY?
