I'm getting ready to buy another grinder and would like some advice from you guys that do a lot of hollow grinding.

What size grinding wheel would you recommend for hollow grinding
mediun to large size blades.( Mostly hunters), grinder comes with either a 6",8", or 10" contact wheel.

Thanks for your suggestions :D

Hey Buxton

I`m useing a 8in. wheel, but when i buy
another grinder I`ll get a 10or12in. wheel.
I think Mr. Ralph uses a 14in. wheel.
It`s not much help I know:)

Bill,I would get the 10",if you need smaller later you can always purchase an 8"xtra wheel for a lot less $$$ than a 10".

Atleast a 10" wheel and get a smooth faced one,not serrated. As usual, imho!:)

does't the 14 and up make more of a flat ground looking grind
were the 8 and 10 make more of a hollow, you can take more meat
of fast with the large wheel but speed really is not the name of the
game looks are,I may be wrong in my thinking I don't look done any one who uses a large wheel I think is 10 plenty big.I would like to hear the advantage of a 14 inch wheel if you are makeing a knife with a 4 or 5 inch blade the one I have seen done with a large wheel
look more like a flat ground blade the grind line up next to the rib of the knife.

I believe Rob Frink makes a wheel that has changeable "tires". I forget the sizes though.

I have always liked the way a flat grind cuts deep with little effort. I also have always liked the looks of a hollow grind, the way it picks up the light and has the nice thin geometry at the edge. If I use the big wheel I can have the best of both types of grind. It also works good on the old styles of period bowies. Its almost flat but still hollow ground.

You will find as I did that the closer you get to a Flat grind the better your blades will perform!!!
A Flat ground or near Flat will make a MUCH lighter, faster and more flexable blade while still retaining strength. As long as you don't grind into the spine.
I started and still use a 10" thats what I'm used too now. However the more I practice Flat grinding the better I like the results:D

Make no mistake learning to grind well takes time and practice, practice, practice.
However you will also find that whatever style grind you start with usually ends up being your favorite as it get easier for you.
