Does anybody have any kind of homemade hollow grinding attachments. I have a 1 x 42 belt sander of an unknown type that i'm very happy with for most of the work i do on my knives, I would just like to rig something up to make hollow grinding a little easier.

Thanks

The only thing that makes hollow grinding easier is lots and lots of practice. Now git out there. :)

Even though a lot of people frown upon using helpers for hollow grinding you might want to try using a workrest to get you started. After you get some experience you can move on to freehand grinding if you choose to do so. If you have any doubts check out the hollow grinding video from Johnny Stout. He advocates the use of a workrest and it obviously works for him. Of course, there are some grind types where a workrest just isn't possible or practical but it's a good way to get started.

Texas Knifemaker's Supply carries (at least used to) a belt grinding attachement to put on a regular stone grinder. If I remember right it has a contact wheel and platen. Not sure how well they work but a number have shown up around here from time to time. I think the biggest drawback is they don't use 72" belts - but maybe it was Chris Crawford who rebuilt one to take them. Worth a look anyway.

Thanks folks for the help. I tried it again Sunday, whew I need to practice for sure.

Thanks,
Troy
