Which size wheel is preferred by most makers for hollow grinding 1" wide stock for blades 1/8" thick. A 5" or 8" or some other size? Plus, a 2X42 or 2X72" belt? Having only one wheel. Thanks, DM

I'm not sure how you can run both belt lengths, but the longer the better for sure.

In my limited experience, I've seen generalities for full height grinding, and I think 8" is the minimum for 1" stock.

You don't necessarily need to grind full height though.

I know there are guys here who could give you a much better answer.

You could sure draw it out with a compass to see how it looks.

For 1/8" stock, my opinion is 8" minimum. 10" is better. 12 or 14 wouldn't be too big.

Grizzled, I probably didn't make the belt length statement clear. The belt length is a 2nd question; would one prefer to use 2X42" or 2X72"? Thanks guys. DM

Hi David the 8" wheel using a 2x72" belt will do just fine, i use a serrated cant afford to have an assortment... YET. as you know there spendy! Enjoy GHaile

Thanks GHaile, I've been using a 8" wheel for years with little problems. But just recently someone told me I was working too hard hollow grinding with a 8" wheel and should use a 5" as they're much faster.
I thought on 1" wide stock that would create a thick convex edge. Hence, the reason for my asking. I could see using a 10" as it would take down the edge quicker w/ fewer passes. So, I'll think on this.
Who will retread a wheel with angle tread? Thanks, DM

There are several businesses that will recoat a wheel

It depends on where you are, In your profile I can't find a country,,, let alone a state or city.

Try searching under "contact wheel vulcanization".

The only reason I can think of for an 5" wheel to be faster would be that it's removing less material on each pass as the contact surface is less than an 8" wheel. The problem I see with that logic is that there are times for a 5" wheel and times for an 8" wheel so the two are mutually exclusive.

In a perfect world (one with plenty of wheel sizes on hand), you choose the wheel to use based on the knife you're grinding. A larger wheel delivers a higher grind on a wider and thicker blade than a small one will. I have 4", 5", 8" & 10" wheels and choose the one that fits the knife best.

That's just how I do it, others may certainly disagree.

With regard to the belt length question, the longer the better. A long belt runs longer because it won't wear out as fast, or fill as fast when sanding scale material, it also runs cooler.
