I also posted this on the survival forum.

Greetings,

I have a couple of hollow handle knives, and I'd like to build up a survival equipment tube to carry in the handle.

I'm looking for plastic storage tube with lid that is:
2.5" long by 0.75" diameter
2.2" long by 0.75" diameter.

Obviously, the lids have to fit inside to maintain the 0.75" OD.
But they don't need to be waterproof.

I've exhausted my abilities to no avail on eBay, Amazon and Google.

Anyone have a source for these tubes?

I'd much appreciate some help.

Thank you

Z

You could buy these and cut them down a little.

Maybe a rubber cork/stopper that can be cut down as well would work for your lid

Good call Nixelplix^

I'd be surprised if the OP finds something better. McMaster.com sells a variety of tubular plastic containers, but none that would work as well for the OP's purposes as your suggestion.

Those tubes could be cut down with a fine-toothed hacksaw (available at most major hardware stores) and I was just at Lowes recently and they sell rubber stoppers (they're in one of the chests of drawers in the hardware (nuts and bolts) section.

I'm going to record that link you provided in case I ever need a 3/4" tubular container.

To the OP, I'm curious what the knives are (brand/maker). The handles of many hollow-handle type knives can be made waterproof with a rubber o-ring.

Knives are schrade and boker apparo. Nothing fancy. Just users.
The handles are both waterproof. The tube doesn't have to be waterproof. It's just a good way to keep things organized in there.

In something that small - roughly the diameter of a US dime, you could try some hose - they sell food grade silicone hose in 14mm id 18mm od, which is close to your diameter - you could then seal the ends with corks etc - just a thought.

I know you can get 1m lengths of "Clear Food Grade Silicone Tube Hose Pipe Brand New High Quality" on the big auction site.

You nailed it. If I can get some storage tubes with press fitting cap, I can cut to size.
They have them for 50 dimes, with screw top. But they are 2.75" long. And I can't cut down due to screw top.

I guess the question is, how is everyone else storing things Supplies in their hollow handle?

I've got nothing against hollow handled knives, but I have a hard time imagining what kind of items I'd store in one. I guess it would have to be stuff that might be useful in a rare circumstance, but not things I'd use frequently or would want readily accessible. Maybe a small sewing kit? I think I'd rather use some kind of piggyback pouch for the sheath if I wanted to have an extra bit o' kit with my knife.

Anyway, OP, whatever you decide to stuff inside the handle, make sure you think about how to get it all out again. Cling wrapped items might be a pain in the choobies to extract...

Good luck! :)

I just keep my stuff in the handle. I don't want to have to deal with another thing to open if I'm using the things that I keep in there in a emergency. Its hard enough to start a fire with a fire steel when your cold and exhausted as is. Fire steel, water proof matches, kydex cord and a striker are pretty much all I keep in there. Sometime of them have tylenol and tiny chem lights as well as I've found those handy over the years.

If I'm going to want to carry more I carry a altoids tin with more things I've found useful in a pouch on the sheath.
