Hollow handle pins

Hi all,

I have been thinking about buying a Bark River knife and was wondering what the appeal and or benefit of the hollow handle pins are. I see them noted on the description as though they were bragging about this feature so assumed there is something special about it.

Thanks,

Stuart

I have a Woodland with hollow pins, and I can't see any improvement because of them. It's a good knife, but I'd just as soon have solid pins. You could ask Mike Stewart at the BRKT forums at KF, I'm sure he can give a better answer than me since he owns the company. :)

I believe the Hollow pins are just another option to keep the price down. Mosaic pins cost more than Solid pins, and Solid pins cost more than Hollow pins. If you look around you can find most Bark River models in all three variations, and with all other things being equal, the hollow tube models are generally cheapest.

Any price difference in the pins is negligible. I'm not sure if BRKT offers any reason for hollows, but some users like them to assist in lashing the knife to a pole, for use as a spear or a pole-axe tool. I haven't done so myself, but I recall some folks in Wilderness and Survival have, with results that were surprisingly impressive to me (for reaching high branches, for example). You can lash a knife to a pole without the hollow pins, but they help greatly if you do.
