Does anybody have any experience with any of those hollow walking stick things? I can't remember specific brands now, but I recall having seen those in the past and thinking they were a great idea. Usually they're made out of fiberglass or some such material.

Or even better, has anybody built their own?

The main thing I had in mind was putting a mini-kit or a few certain items inside the staff itself.

I made my own walking stick starting with what is, for me, the ideal resource, a 5' (or 6') Lathi from Cold Steel. I don't like the hi-tech walking sticks. The handles are not right, there is no added height for when you need it to help balance on logs, or work your way through streams, etc. The Rattan is not hollow, but still very light and much stronger than the aluminum or fiberglass rods...

I added a nice tip too that grips well on dirt or rock and can dig as well. Also a few other features like a pot holder notch, etc. You can see this at:

A friend of mine built her own out of bamboo. Since bamboo is hollow in sections she has the top section filled with a mini-kit and capped off with a decorative cap. She drilled a hole through the second section down and put a leather thong through it to loop around her wrist. She put the rubber knob from a crutch on the bottom to protect it from wear and tear. She also decorated it by carving her name into the wood, and who knows what else. Quite ingenious, really.

I bought one of the alloy tube extendable walking sticks, purely because I was seduced at how gadgety it was, it even has a shock absorbing spring inside that allows it to "give" about 1/2" and interchangable caps for pavement / snow etc.
Although it is adjustable and very comfortable, it feels very flimsy and I suspect would not stand up to much lateral force, I couldn't defend myself against a dog for instance, I think it would just bend.

I made a fly rod case out of 1.5" PVC pipe about 5' long, glued a cap on one end, put a screwcap on the other end. It works as a pretty good walking & wading staff and the fly rod always gets to the lake in good shape. Wrapped a few feet of copper wire & covered that with duct tape around the PVC about a foot below midpoint, dropped in a few pill bottles with small splitshot sinkers, hooks, popping bugs, a few nails & needles, waterproof matches, mono & a leader, a razor blade, an empty .22 shell for a whistle, etc...
