Holster leather?

Yes, that's a good all-around wt. for most projects, including holsters.

Is that per square foot or the total for the single shoulder?

If its square foot price then your better off at Tandy/Leather Factory

If its total, then you might be ok, but buying sight unseen is a lot of trust in that employee to get you a good one.

8/9oz veg tan shoulders are what I use on my holsters & sheaths.

It's probably the same stuff as Tandy's premium stuff (imported from Mexico). Price is a bit high, even compared to Tandy. I just paid $85 for a full piece of 8/9oz double shoulders (Tandy item #9052-01, around 12 sq ft).

I definitely wouldn't buy the stuff online, though. Took me three trips to Tandy a few months apart to find my most recent decent piece. A lot of them can be wrinkled, scratched, or otherwise marked up, so I prefer to hand pick my own stuff. Now if I was ordering some Hermann Oak or Wickett & Craig stuff, I wouldn't have a problem ordering online.

By the way, my guess is that's the price per sq ft. So if you get a single shoulder at 6 sq ft, multiply that price x6.

You will invest quite a bit of time designing and making your holster or other project. My thought has always been, "If you start out with crap, the finished project will most probably resemble crap also".

The link you provided had a very good and probably honest description of what you were buying, but there were a couple of red flags for me personally. "Import", Fat Wrinkles, "Few Scars" and the cheap? price. (not sure whether that is per foot or the whole shoulder.) If it is for the whole sholder then it is cheap....not inexpensive,...CHEAP. If it is by the foot then top quality USA Wickett and Craig would be a couple of bucks per foot less expensive.

It's your time and your reputation, but for me, I wouldn't squander either on cheap import leather.

Thanks guys,I think that is for 4-5 sq ft. I really don't want to invest in 15-16 sq ft of leather, for what will will probably be a couple holsters. Scars wouldn't bother me,thin spots would. Where can I get about 6 sq ft of decent leather without breaking the bank?

Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa all have Tandy/Leather Factory retail locations. You could hand pick a piece to meet your requirements in any of these.

You are right ,but I really don't want to drive 50 miles (the closest location). There's no place online that can be trusted?

Well not much closer than Orlando then.I get my leather from a local Christian Leather Workshop. He gets it in from Wickett and Craig. What your getting is cheap but I have been there before myself many years ago.Do strive to always use the best you can afford, it makes your work better and your job easier, and your customers deserve and usually expect the best.Dave:)

Dave, I'm not going into business. I just want to make some stuff for my guns. This all started out as a simple project. Finding the right leather is making kydex look good to me.

Kydex for your guns?? Please post pictures.

Sounds to me like you'll just have to start from the beginning like the rest of us did, no one brought the leather to me.....the 50 mile drive to your nearest Tandy will do you some good, and you'll find out about the other tools you'll need to make a holster with.

Rayban-Will post pics if I do kydex (looking more likely every passing second...) Nope, that 50 mile drive won't do anybody any good, and when did I ask someone to bring me leather? All I asked for were opinions on a potential purchase,or possibly an alternative product, Did not ask for a free lunch from anyone.

Take a deep breath and read it again, I dont see any slam from rayban and yes I read it twice. ;)

The written word is a fickle thing and its very difficult to convey feeling and very easy to come off with a totally different mood than intended.

I think, in my translation of "bring it to me" was via postal employee, not begging someone to get it for you.

Mr. Bryan, I am going to be quite formal here. You have asked for assistance from other forum members here and they responded with friendly advice. That you chose to be sarcastic does you no credit. You are welcome here but it would not be out of line to be a little less abrasive. ---Sandy---

Leatherman-Read it three times. Mr.Rayban implies I am asking for some sort of preferential treatment. If he did not intend that ,then all he needs do is speak up. I will be happy to apologize for my part in the misunderstanding.

Swivelknife-My response was quite measured.

Because people asked I will post a picture of the holster I cobbled out of kydex. Feel free to laugh at my belly. The holster in question probably used $2.00 worth of kydex and an hour or so of time. It will conceal under a button up shirt,it might conceal under a large t-shirt. Don't have one to try on. For this type of rig,you must have a good stiff belt,I can recommend Rafter S. I am wearing it with a wilderness belt.
