I received the Horrigan hawk today, and I was simply blown away by the fact that it appears these hawks are actually laminated. I thought they were just differentially tempered, and the line was a temper line, but it appears to be a weld pattern. All I can say is or rather not say:
.
Okay, I just checked the website and he says they are made with a temper line, but this definately looks like a weld line to me.
I'll post pics later.
Maybe I'm wrong, and that's just the way he makes hawks, I am not and will probably never become a real big hawk fan, but I do know something about knives.

That was a great deal! congrats.
I was under the impression that most, or at least many forged hawks had a laminated cutting edge.

I think I was wrong though, because I don't know much about hawks yet. I'm not sure you can properly call it laminatating if you use the same steel, then it's just the construction technique, since I didn't find anything on the Horrigan website, that's what I have to assume, I guess.

It's not laminated in that sense but actually 2 steels forged. Our hawks are actually a softer steel wrapped with a harder steel and then forged so that you have toughness and still have sharpening and cutting ability. We have guys who use the Rainier Scout for hunting and with the sharp blade and small beard can gut and skin out a deer and the hawk is still strong enough to quarter it up.

i've never posted on these forms. But yes the hawk is pattern weld with three steels 5160 for the edge with 15n20 and 1018.

I remeber that hawk I don't even think I was a journeyman by then. I would have bought it back if I had seen it on ebay. Good for you. May God bless this country and the men that defend it.

There is no stamp on there, I'll send you an email.
Thanks.

There are as many ways to forge a hawk as you can skin a cat . It can be for economy or design reasons . Tradehawks used a minimum of carbon steel for the edge and a softer steel for the rest . Proof is in the pudding . Give her a try .
