Just took delivery of my new Mora Military Clipper knife. I got it to go in my bug out bag and WOW! I have NEVER received a knife this sharp out of box before! Are all Moras like this????? What have I been missing?! And all under $15 if you shop around. I'll say it again: WOW!

None of my pics yet, this pic borrowed from seller.

Nice knife, Mora's are a steal...One of my favorite knive makers. Don't understand the "bug out bag" though...where are you really going if shit hits the fan? really now. If you really live where it says in your profile you got all you need right there....lots of deer and and lots of corn. No crazy shit will ever happen in Iowa and if it did a bug out bag would do you no good. I hate that stupid preppers tv show.

Haha, I was getting ready to post something similar, got mine in the mail yesterday. My first Mora, and wow, I freaking love it!

I have a carbon steel Mora. The handle is wooden, dyed red, and is very barrel shaped. Out of the three I own, it is my favorite fixed blade. It was sharp out of the box, but couldn't hold a candle to several of my Case knives (particularly my stainless large stockman), an Opinel, my mini Griptillian, and any of the SAKs and Spyderco's. Now, it takes one heck of a sharp edge a heck of a lot easier than most of my knives, except for my Opinel. Pairs well with my SAK Spartan and Fiskar's folding saw for my hiking gear.

No real reason to dog someone about their choices to be be prepared. I'm not a prepper or own a bug out bag but in theory should the crap hit the fan, major flood, tornado...ect you have a bag of useful stuff to help. Town gets flattened by a tornado and you have your bag with you, you're sure you have survival gear to get through a few days and maybe the tools to help save a family member or neighbor after things blow over.

It honestly has nothing to do with the show. I have yet to watch the show. Bug out bags have been around a long time. I'd be willing to bet more than a few on here have them. You say I'm in the perfect place, which is find but I can't hunt deer without a gun or knife (in a pinch) or wouldn't it be helpful to have a first aid kit and some dry clothes on hand?
Not to be a dick, just trying to relay my POV.

And a very mature and great point of view you have there Terry. "Better to have and not need than to need and not have".

Blessings,

Omar

I live in Iowa also and have been working on a bug out bag...not that I'm planning to bug out anywhere but there are more uses for them than bugging out. It just peace of mind knowing that it's there if the need ever arise. Mostly all organized in one place.

I too bought a Mora it was razor sharp out of the box as well, not as sharp as my bk9 was out of the box but still shaving sharp.

Gotta love those scandi grinds! I have a mora classic and I love it. Don't carry it too often, but it's fun and always ready for action when I decide to carry it.

Most all Moras come scalpel sharp, and I think I know why. From what I can tell, the factory edge of a Mora is something around 10°, which allows it to become insanely sharp. The "meat" behind the edge also allows it to be stronger than a traditional (hollow or flat) grind. I don't have any kind of testing jig for the angles, but it is definitely lower than 15°.

I handled a display case brand new , put on the shelf a week before and every single mora had a pretty average edge, I wouldnt call them scalpel sharp ( and yes I looked for the sharpest one) lol

I have handled about 10 and each one was just below scary sharp, something around as sharp as I can get with my 3k belt then stropping. Well a little (maybe 15%) more dull.

The cheaper (cheapest) Mora work knives are a bit hit and miss when it comes to factory sharpness. I intentionally picked a dull one since I got it to practice sharpening on. My mora 2000 was very sharp though (microbevel).

I guess you don't live in tornado alley. Some of us do. Ask the people of Greensburg, Kansas if a bug out bag is a good idea

in b4 Niner

Nothing wrong with being prepared, and able to evacuate quickly in emergency.
We don't always have much time to pack in emergencies.

Nothing bad happens in Iowa I guess. We should all move there. :p

Mora's are pretty awesome. I don't think they all come sharp but I buy mine from Baryonyx who checks them before he ships them so I don't have to worry about it. :D

I recieved a brand new Mora HD Companion that came dull as a butter knife, I had not sharpened a scandi grind on the Sharpmaker, but at 40* it slices like a champ now. Also, as the others have stated it is smart to be prepared with a sensible "bug out" or emergency bag.

I have that same Mora (Companion), and it came very sharp. A little time on strop with some Flexcut Gold, and that baby can shave a flea... I got mine for $12 shipped.

At that price, I will probably get two more - one for the tackle box, and one for my bug-out bag.

As for the prepping discussion, it's great to have a bag of supplies, be it for a day hike, a weekend trip, or a natural disaster. If nothing else, you have a bunch of useful items consolidated and easy to find.. what's wrong with that?

I lived in Tuscaloosa AL when the f5 tornado came through in april 11, and I was sure glad I had my BOB and other preps that day. I had fresh water and food, when everyone else was waiting for the gaurd to give them something to drink.

When there is no electricity, no running water, no roof over your head, etc, you'd be wishing you didn't think prepping was so stupid.
