In keeping with the "Good, Bad and Just Weird" I just found another of my 20 year old bizarre knifes.

I bought this out of the old Shotgun News back when, I think they were Russian. I tried it a time or 2 and put it away.

The picture says it all. You preload the blade assy into the heavy spring assisted handle, then set the safety and insert the pin (like a hand grenade)...then when ready pull the pin....aim....press the trigger and watch it fly.
From 8 feet the blade will punch thru a 1/2" plywood board. Or for the less lethal approach just leave the cover on and it would be like getting hit with a sledgehammer.

I've never seen another one. My thought is major illegal to carry. Just the thought of going off in my pocket is real scary....ouch!!

Not for sale, or trade. Just love sharing with my fellow
knife pals...

Your thoughts please.

Ballistic knife. As far as I've heard, it's illegal to possess anywhere in the US.

Illegal or not, it's a great find :D

Doesn't look all that sophisticated, though... wouldn't take much to make one at home anyway.

Major crime just to possess. You can get a permit for a machine gun, but not for a ballistic knife. (No, it doesn't have to make sense -- it's a weapon law....)

There are some old posts in the archives here about experiences with them before they were outlawed. I played with one once myself, back when the legend was that they were developed by the CIA to use in Vietnam. Later the legend became KGB, and the knives were a little different too....

Really? Story I always heard was Russian, and that it was a mistranslation of the NRS scout knives... they are ballistic, but with bullets, not blades. Still don't have a great grasp of getting images/video to show in BF, but here's a link...

Is this one of those oddities that gets turned into some sort of legend, like those so-called Parachute knives that United, Budk, etc carry with the odd mechanism (phantographic? something like that), or the Hackman Balisong being some sort of CIA knife?

I think it is. It's obviously not a very practical weapon, so it'll sell better with a story. I have never seen any evidence that ballistic knives were used by the CIA or the KGB or anyone else, except for those ads in the back pages of magazines....

Well...I'm shocked. I had no idea. Thanks for the scare!!
I'm way to old to go to jail.
I just removed the spring and discarded it.
now it is just a cheap knife that falls apart.
I'm thinking this law must have been passed in the last 20 years.
Not sure how they were ever sold in the first place.

Ah, Spetsnaz ballistic knife! Sold in the back pages of Soldier of Fortune magazines! Didn't some guy in NJ make these up in his shop?
