Variable speed/reversable buffer.

I built this double shaft buffer using a new surplus Leeson 2 HP DC motor from American Scientific ( http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm?subsection=18&category=174 ), a Minarik RG100UC DC drive off Ebay, a wooden freight box that a machine vise was shipped in, and a couple shaft arbors from Sheffield Knife Supply.

Maybe not pretty to you but its Daddy's new baby.

Picture is here: http://riflestocks.tripod.com/buffer.html

You can see the DC drive heat sink under the motor. To the left is the power on switch and forward/reverse speed potentiometer.

Hey man that looks great! Your motor sure looks in better condition than mine ... and I bought the "new" one! :( Go figure.

Now, if I could just get this %&*##$@ controller to work... Nothing I do seems to be the right thing. I guess I'm going to have to hire an electrician. Problem is, I've spent all my money (and then some) lately on eBay for wood. There sure has been some nice stuff lately.

I wonder if pink ivory would polish up real nice on this baby? :)

Dave, I wish we lived closer. I'd look at that controller for you.

Have you put power to it yet?

That is the second new Leeson I got from them. The first new one was very used. The next time I bitched that this time I wanted a new one.
So now I have a new very used Leeson on the grinder and a new Leeson on the buffer. Same price for each.

Pink ivory?

I wish you did too Roger, whenever I put the power to this thing it blows the breaker. Which I guess is far preferable to an explosion followed by smoke pouring out of my $125 controller...

Pink ivory is probably the rarest wood there is, tight fine grain and a true pink color. Beautiful stuff and you almost neve see it for sale. And then suddenly three pieces on eBay... I wish I were wealthy instead of in debt. :D At least I got some of it.

Dave

Dave, if nothing else works for you box it up. I'll take a look if you like.

Roger

Roger that might just be it. Give me a week to see if I can track down a cheap electicial locally, and if that doesn't work I may just send this baby to you. It sure as hell isn't doing me any good!

Very good. Try to find an electronics techie as opposed to an electrician. Just don't smoke it first. Another thing I will repeat: If jumpered for 115VAC input I would be sure to jumper the output for 90VDC, not 180VDC. That propbably would be a problem. That thing probably also has a terminal strip for switches and a speed potentiometer too. Did you contact that fellow that offered to find you a manual?? Email me if you want to send it. No charge.
