Home invasion robbery part 2, what do you do?

Well guys let's see what type of responses we get for this thread part 2. The original thread, now in the H.I. archives generated alot of information.

O.K. here we go:
Your neighborhood has been hit with violent home invasion robberies, your house hasn't been hit yet. Then one night around 6:23 pm a group of thugs crashes through your front door. What do you do? Do you let them take what they want and beat you senseless? Or do you fight back? If you fight back what do you use? A gun? A khukuri? If you choose to fight with a weapon, where would you shoot, cut, or chop to neutralize the threat? Let's see where we go from here.

BA,
I don't know about you, but if they hit my place at that time they could get what ever they could carry, cuz no one would be at home.

Other wise there would be a gteat deal of fly food around in short order. If they arrived before sacktime they wouldn't make it much past the entry point. Other wise it will take me a little longer.

"Where would I shoot?" It depends on the number, but probably pray and spray in their direction, while I've got them tightly grouped together. The Khukuri will take care of any survivors. That's for the first setting. For the second, that depends on where I find them. End results would all end up the same. The Khukuri would take care of any survivors.

I'm getting older and I don't move so well any more, so I only play "flat-out". When a punk wanted to mix it up with me awhile back, I told him,"Are you ready to die?
Because, this won't be over until one or both of us are dead." His interest faded.
One thing I learned a long time ago....Never, never leave a live enemy behind you.

Martial arts are not my department, but saw on the news some time last year or so, in southern California, a story of a home invasion where Grandma waded in with a machete. She didn't do much actual damage, but the the gunmen decided they had the wrong address or something, and left in hurry. They outnumbered the lady, and were better armed, but they were opportunistic predators and not bold marauders.

This last week, there was another home invasion in southern CA, where the robbers were tying up the rest of the family, including a bunch of small children, and grandpa went for his gun. He killed one of the robbers, another robber killed him, and the surviving robbers took off. He may well have saved the lives of his children and grandchildren by doing what he did.

I guess it all depends. If I am by myself I would probably leave the house and try to call the police. However, if I wasn't alone and my loved ones were in danger, God help those thugs because either they or I would soon be on a voyage to meet our maker. What would I use, gun or khukuri? Probably both, as I would first shoot them and then deliver the finishing stroke with my beloved Gelbu Special.

They would be met by a Glock 17 and/or a Beretta 1201 shotgun. Center mass of whatever target presents itself.

It depends, if the recent house invasions have resulted in deaths and the attackers have been using guns, then by all means I will use a gun. If it wasn't so, I'd still use a gun, heh, becoz it is more efficient and less risky than physical combat with or without weapons. If u go in with your bladed weapon, you are taking a big risk becoz u will never know what the attacker is armed with or who is backing him/her up. However, I will carry a bladed weapon or another firearm as backup.

Remember, this is not a test of skill, its either u die or him and in 99.9% of the time, the thug would like it be u. Unless I can get a clear look on the thug/s to see if its just some kids or someone unarmed or armed slightly, then I'd shoot at the chest to maximise % of hitting.

Also, it seems many ppl get killed by their own weapons becoz they don't use it, so imo if u are gonna pull out a weapon, u might as well be prepared to use it.

In terms of risking loved ones etc, it will be a lot safer to just get rid of the enemy asap. If I could get a good aim, I'd take him out with a head shot, if I can't, then I'll shoot until he drops.

All this wouldn't happen of course if u properly guarded your house. House alarms monitored by security firm, reinforced windows, motion sensors, guard dogs and etc.
If u live in a bad neighbourhood, then moving is probly your best option.

My response would be dictated in large part by where in my home I happened to be when the attack occured. I have weapons of varying kinds in several different places. I would grab the most lethal weapon handy and go from there. By the way, in addition to khuks and guns, I also have pepper spray around. As a cop I have to use the stuff on occassion and it does work -- though it doesn't always immediately immobolize the bad guys, it will usually slow them down enough to where other measures can be taken. In other words, the spray can buy you precious time, depending on the circumstances of course. But I think it goes without saying, if I have a firearm at hand when the bad guys crash in, I'll start popping caps, without hesitation.

I live in an older part of town , by this I mean the houses are up to 70 years old and most of the people living here are also 70 years old. I myself am 30 .
There has recently been a rash of breakins. My brother-in-law (a burglery detective) says it's because the elderly are easy marks . I am prepared .
I have a secured handgun readily available in all rooms . Any unwanted visitors are in for multiple high velocity hotlead injections. Near each firearm is also a choice melee wepon . Right hand -gun ,left-cqc wepon .If they get close i'll fend off with wepon , finish off with gun .

Funny you should mention this BA. A couple of weeks ago 5 guys tryed this on a friends back door at 3am. All they got were sore shoulders. His room is in the back of the house and upstairs so the first hit on the door woke him up. He quicky responded with a shotgun blast near the attackers. They needed no more convincing.

As for me I don't know what I would do. Just too many variables.

Like Vampi said....many variables.
At 6:23 PM, both wife and I are up and about, and alert...and all doors windows are ALWAYS locked, which means we have a small cushion of time to prepare while they smash in. That means in our case grabbing the loaded carbine from behind the door and/or the ditto magnum pistol from the bedroom nightstand. Unexpected knocks on the door are always answered with a firearm within easy reach, and backup out of sight of the door. These days, the Gelbu is almost always in easy reach, should 'option two' be necessary.
At OH-Dark-thirty, a smashin would have to get past several barriers to get to us, and by that time the Sheriff would be on the way with the meat wagon to pick up the trash (they know me.)
Cleaning guns and polishing your 'really big' knife on the front porch in full view of the neighborhood is a powerful discouragement to the lawless. The word gets around. It also helps to live in the country and have a pistol range in your back yard, and NRA stickers on your vehicle.
I'm now officially an 'old' man. That means not much to lose, so I can go for broke, should the circumstances warrant.

An ad in a gun magazine said, "Shoot once to stop, again to make sure, dial 911 and reload."

Ozzie, I like that. I have my antique .38 at the ready all the time and a couple of khukuris laying around. Shoot first, talk later, and one round thru the ceiling or floor.

We have dogs though they are small they are loud and for us anyway they would remove the element of surprise.
If this did happen to do nothing would be an error.
Since there is no a,b,c way that this could happen there can be no a,b,c, way to handle it.The weapon at hand will have to the weapon of choice not matter what it is; the method of forestalling the enemy, will be determined by how they present them selves to you, posiition, distance, weapons, the relation ship to them and other members of your family, will all be factors. You can only hope that you react fast and do the right things and in time to save your family from harm. You must do your best and never give up keep your mined locked on these S.O.B's.They have to be stopped and if you don't do it who will?

Looking good so far! The home invasion robberies that happen in the S.F. bay area are always very violent. I have arrested multiple gang members that speacialize in this type of crime. Having a layered defense helps alot. A good home security system large dog or small, and some type of last ditch weapon should cover the basics. As usual proper mindset will help the defender prevail. If you give me a chance, I'll use a blade over a firearm. Close quarters is where a good large blade always worked for me. I must be doing something right or else I wouldn't be here typing this response.

BA, it is good info to have and it is good to think about response before you are faced with the actual event. Remember the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared! And this is very good advice.

Bill,
Be prepared is good, but add to that: Be Resourceful, Redundency is good.

This is all good info.
If there are weapons of any kind in your household all family members should know the proper use and safe handling of these weapons anyway.
You never know one of them maybe saving you.You can't see every where and things will be happening very fast and a close range.
Good thread BA.

Khukuri FAQ

A friend of mine has been burgled twice. The first time he was asleep -- he woke up, grabbed a replica medieval broadsword off the wall because he could reach it quicker than his guns, and chased the burglars away. The police picked them up a few minutes later, and they told the police they considered themselves lucky to be alive after being chased by a naked maniac with a forking SWORD this big! They seemed to be happy to be locked up in jail where they'd be safe from the sword-wielding maniac. The police are still laughing over that story....

Word got around in the criminal community that was a good house to stay away from....

Several years later after he'd moved to a different house in the same town (he shoulda notified all the local burglars of his change of address ... why don't the change-of-address kits they give away at the post office provide for that???) he came home to find two burglars in the house. He had a 9mm Tanfoglio in a shoulder holster.... That time the burglars took his tv with them as they escaped. The police asked him why he didn't shoot the burglar as he was leaving with the tv ... my friend said, "If I'd shot him he would have dropped it!"

It was a couple of days before the police caught them that time and they never did recover the tv. Oh, well....
