I have an old washer that the motor is still good on and I have been thinking about bolting some kind of flange on the shaft and then screwing a pressed wood or solid center round plywood onto it.

I know I would need something to mount the motor on and that without some kind of hinge system that it would only be good for square grinding.
I think I can make it work.Oughta be pretty cheap to build too.

Anyone already done this so I won't have to reinvent the
wheel?

Any suggestions or ideas that might help?

Yvsa,
I posted a topic the other day (Flat grinding tip of the day). I built my disk grinder out or an old belt disk combination. I use the disk only. The aluminum disk is covered with a 3/8" thick rubber disk. I clean up all of my flat ground blades (all i do is flat grinds) on this machine. It works wonders.

BTW, the motor already had a base that it was attached to.

Yvsa,
I made one about 10 years ago. It was my first knifemaking machine. I made up an aluminum flange that fit the shaft of the motor. You can buy flanges from Sheffields Knifemakers Supply. They charge about $15 for them. 1-800-874-7007 is there number.
I attached a piece of 1/2" Mahogany, just under 9" diameter to the face plate with wood screws and epoxy. This gives a more solid feel than grinding on the aluminum. I went with 9" diameter so I could cut standard size abrasive sheets to fit it. You also have to be able to reverse the rotation to grind both sides of your blade! I made lots of smaller flat ground blades on that grinder. I still have it mounted to my bench and use it now for sanding my Kydex material. It's a handy machine that I will never get rid of!

I made my disc ginder out of a 3/4 hp. dual shaft motor, disc on each end no need to reverse and the paper lasts longer. I built a copy of the table that truegrit uses on their disc grinder.

YVSA, I have a 9" aluminium disc I took off my 6 by 48. I have no use for it, and you're more than welcome to it. Just pay the shipping. Let me know if you want it. Take care! Michael
