HOME MADE KNIFE? TANG STAMP IDENTIFICATION?

I recently rescued a knife from the dumpster. It was rusted but it caught my attention because it was so heavy. It is a 10inch butchers knife. The original handle had cracked and somebody wrapped and soldered wire to repair. I found this tang stamp. My question is does anybody recognize this tang stamp? Do I have somebodies home made knife? Thankyou.

Not homemade, it's a converted kitchen or trade knife (basically a lower priced work knife usually in a chef or butcher pattern made for hard use). I've seen that stamp before on knives imported into South America, but I forget if it's French, German, or the importer's stamp. If you look up "cuchillo de campo" or "cuchilla de campo" you'll see similar. The Cuchillo versions are straighter blades, like a chef or traditional Gaucho knife, the Cuchilla versions are more rounded.

It's pre WWII also.

Thanks for that information. I have something to start my search. This knife has a lot of heft. It was found in a closet at an Italian Club that has been open since the 30's. I do some research and report back. Thanks
 
I’m wondering how much of the heft you describe is the extra metal on the handle? The solder is most likely lead. Probably doesn’t belong in a kitchen until it has a new handle.
 
Granted the handle is heavy but the thickest part of the back spine is 5/16 inch thick. It is a brute of a knife. I have no plans to actually use this knife. It is to heavy to be practical. It sure is an interesting knife.
 
I say give it a new handle and use it, let it have some life and find out if it will hold an edge. You can practice your skills or find someone who would do it for you. I bet thiswould make a cool Longhunter's knife.
