Hey guys Im kinda new to this part of the forum I mostly just read cause the info is great here! Anyway I was reading a thread here last week about the altoids survial tin knife. So when I had a few hours to kill in the garage I made my own. Nothing fancy ( obviously) I cut it out of an old rusty piece of carbon steel, ground it down, did a little shaping etc. My hardening and annealing skills leave a little to be disired but its good enough for a last resort blade. Still a little big for the altoids tin coming in at about 4 1/2 inches. Maybe I'll get the next one to fit. I did a little whittlin with it but I'll give it some abuse later in the week- Joel

if it cuts and will hold an edge i don't see any problem with it being a great knife. you have to remember that we the people are very spoiled when it comes to knives. that knife you made is probably at least 50% better than any knife your great great grandfather ever had (or could conceive for that matter) and he did okay right?

I like that a lot, you've got a good grip, a pry bar and a decent size and shape cutting edge.

And best of all, you made it yourself.

Excellent!

Looks good, Joel! When I have my get together in May you need to come over.

For your first one. That is not bad a at all.
Good on you for giving it a try.
What is the next one going to look like?

The metal was just an 1/8 inch thick piece of steel that was laying outside. I cut it out with a torch much larger.and ground the rest of it with a grinder ( while keeping it cool) and going very slowly. and a bench sander. The smaller work was done with a dremmel tool. Then I stress relieved it. And heat treated it with a oil quench then annealed it in the oven. Probablly a better way to do it but I was just experimenting to see if if would take an edge and still not become brittle. So far so good. Stomper Id love to come over there in may just let me know when. Thanks for all the nice comments - Joel

You did a great job on that knife! Being your first one and done in your garage real quick you did better than most any of us could do. You need to keep the knife thing going and see where it leads you.
