I got a new Leatherman Wave over the weekend. The first thing that came to mind, the minute I started examining the tool was....... "That bit driver is really, really short". After some research, I was not very happy that I'd have to purchase special Leatherman thin bits, along with a special bit extender. So I made my own bit extender this afternoon, which adapts the Wave over to standard sized bits. I had a ton of those magnetic bit extenders around the house, from a number of Christmas gifts over the years, so I just took one of them to the old bench grinder.
The black tube is a sawed off piece of graphite fishing rod blank, from an old broken Rhino rod. It is permanently plugged on one end, and has a soft nylon removable plug on the other end. I still need to find a nicer looking removable plug. The graphite tube, as well as the bit adapter, both fit in the side pockets of the Wave sheath. The tube will hold 3 standard bits, enough for the remaining 2 philips bits and one slotted bit.
It even works with hex head drill bits.
