I want to make some 1/16" micarta handles for my Cold Steel Ti-Lite Zytel. Can anyone tell me about how many layers of fabric I should use? Since the scales will be very thin, I want to make them as strong as possible. Does the type of fabric used make a difference in strength, and if so, what fabrics are best? I was thinking of using some synthetic fabric-I don't know if it is polyester or nylon-that I have lying around.

Purchase some micarta blocks and re-saw them.(You can not make Micarta at home.It is a phenolic resin laminate.)Even with a cheap table saw,you should get at least four 1.5X6 X1/16" strips.cut them at 1/8" to allow for sanding. Please observe all saw safety when cutting thin strips. It is best (and easiest) to glue the block to a 12" long 1X3 or 1X4 to make the sawing much safer and more accurate.A solid handle block usually costs about $8.
