After this and that and a whole lot of frustration, I decided to give my folders a home made Home Sweet Home! This is my first attempt and me thinks a second one may be slightly different and even more refined. I used a heavy canvas. When rolled up it measures 4" in diameter and 7" long. I doubled up in a couple of pouches just for fun.

I like it too. If I had the skills to make this, I would make the pockets thinner for a snugger fit, put the clips inside the pockets, make the flaps much shorter, and attach a few buttons or Velcro to keep knives from slipping out during movement. Different sizes for small (Case), med, and large (6" blades) knives would be optimal. Sometimes we have to evacuate for hurricanes. These would come in handy to quickly pack up my knife collection in a relatively small space.

I couldn't agree more. Variety is the spice. Look for "Mach 2" to have some refinements.

I like it, too. But, I would leave the flap the size it is now. Just add some Velcro to it and every other pocket. Maybe from mid-pocket down to the bottom. That way you still get some flexibility on how you use the flap and the whole thing should roll/fold easier than with one solid strip of Velcro all the way across.

BTW, are you planning to offer these to other BF members? Remember, we are acting as consultants.:D

Oh, and put some grommets in the top corners. That way you can hang your knives for quick access!

Thanks for the suggestions. If there's something you want built, let me know.

Thanks,
WM

How to prevent rust? Looks like it would hold moisture?

Why would I store a wet knife is this or any case? In order to hold moisture, it had to be wet in the first place wouldn't it? I would think putting a wet knife into a plastic bag would hold moisture. So putting a dry knife into a canvas sack creates moisture...? Ok you got me.

Anything metal kept wrapped up in fabric will rust just like guns kept in a case instead of in a safe or cabinet. I don't know why it's a fact of life. But IMO it'll be fine assuming you handle and oil them regularly like we all do. However if you do a few years in the joint or join the merchant marines or something then you're gonna come home to rusty knives.

I like your roll up thingy. Refine the design a little and make a few to sell, they'd go like hot cakes for a reasonable price around here.

Well I learnt something new tonight. Thanks

Yeah man. Wasnt meaning you would put them away wet! I meant moisture in the environment causing issues. Usually silica packs would help as well.

I think the roll case you made is great but just for short use like transporting while traveling and not long term storage.

Thanks YM for raising my awareness a notch. I live in a pretty dry climate, non the less I will follow some basic care procedures. My knives are out and about quite regularly, but dropping a silica pack at the bottom of each pocket wouldn't hurt. I read that using a freezer bag can be beneficial as well. I might place the "burrito" in one as a additional fail safe. On a side note. The blades which I've had since childhood (many, many, many(sigh)many) years ago, show no signs of rust. Even the ones in leather sheaths. I ponder that our climactic locations play a large contributing factor on this topic. But I digress.

A/C, and heat keep my house pretty dry most of the year. During the "in between" months that A/C, and heat aren't used too much you need to spot check your collection every other month. I enjoy slowly going through my collection, and cleaning each knife every 3-4 months, anyhow.
