Home weather station?

I'm thinking of a home weather station for Wife's x-mas present (she's a science teacher).

Looking for one with the outdoor-mounted instruments and indoor reading / forecasting station. Either a stand-alone system or one that runs through a PC (if those exist). Not interested in an internet-dependent system. Would prefer wired instead of wireless (to avoid batteries in the sending unit).

Anyone recommend a good one?

I used a Peet Brothers system years ago for 3-4 months and was quite happy with it.

For a more portable instrument it's hard to beat the handheld Kestrel. I bought a 4000NV model two years ago and I have been extremely impressed, I take it just about everywhere with me. I love the graphing feature, it's very well built and the batteries seem to last forever (I'm only on my second set in two years).

Both brands are made in USA.

The Peet Brothers products look great, but probably a step up from what I was considering. The Oregon Scientific (for example) models look less 'industrial-strength' but seem more user-friendly and have more features.

Anyone familiar with the products from Oregon Scientific, or similar "consumer-grade" systems?

UPDATE:

Ordered a system from Zephyr Instruments this morning.

I'll post a review and comments some time in the future.
