Heat-coloring, not anodizing. I just point that out since anodizing results in better color clarity, but is not as durable as heat-coloring. So, you gotta pick one or the other, depending on your preferrence.

Great work, though. Makes me eye my 42, and the torch in the workshop.... Not yet, anyway - I'm still trying to resist the 'modification' bug as long as possible.

Can you monitor the color changes and control what colors you want,or is it,what ever color comes out that's the color you get?
I really like the deep blues and purples, and would actually consider doing this to one of my BM's,but I would only want those two colors to show.I don't like the look of the browns or other dark colors that show up.
If I can control the colors and make it JUST blue and purple I think i'll do it.
One last question is it very hard?I mean I know it's done with a blow torch right, you just heat it till it starts changing colors correct? If there's anything i'm missing in the process please fill me in,just in case I decide to anodize one of my 42's.TIA

I anodized my latch with my Windmill lighter.

Green was the first color I got, and there's a little blue in there too.

I think the colors depend on the temperature or duration of heat...so if you could find some way to heat the handles evenly, you'd be able to get a uniform color.

You'd have to watch out for the temper of the blade, right?

Ah! ok, thanks for pointing that out (anodizing/heat-coloring), one learns everyday

I do think that if you could control the heat output you could get an even color.

I disassembled mine before i did it so there wasn't any problem with the blades tempering.

Hey Jones, nice work.

I have to admit, I've been thinking of having a go at colouring my '42! Was it hard to take it apart though? Come to think of it, was it hard to reassemble too?

Hi and thanks
smile.gif

Not difficult at all, i was very surprised, originally i was going to adjust the pivot pins and ended up taking it all apart, i was sitting in my sofa and watching a video at the same time.
I was very surprised at the ease of disassemble as others have pointed out the difficulty, maybe i was just lucky?

I unscrewed the pivots partially and tapped them out with the back off my torxscrewdriver, not much power behind it, just tapping.
Re-assembly was as easy as just pushing the pivots back and realigning the washers and tightening it up.
Easy as 1-2-3

I'm going to experiment some more with this, good fun!

Dragon, Gollnick has mentioned in other posts that the heat from a torch, camping stove, windmill lighter is not hot enough to affect the temper. Yo

Jonas, I knew that, and I actually realised what I'd done just before I saw you'd replied! I just mis-typed it, sorry, but that's whats happens when you're downloading snusk in the background and not really paying attention to what you type!

Thanks for the info though, I might try that.

Hmmm well I'd never get away with saying "a-hole" was a mis-type of "Jonas"... would I?

If it's ok, I'll send you an e-mail about where I live. Obviously I don't own any balis as they're illegal here, and I'd hate like hell for the police to go to all the trouble of hunting me down just to discover I have nothing illegal....
