Hey All
Thought I'd post some pix of my new Benchmade hybrid..."707-401". Actually a Benchmade 705-401 (silver G-10 scales) combined with the blade from a Benchmade 707. BTW, the 705 blade went right into the 707 liners and scales as well.
I saw this done by someone on another forum, and decided I had to try it. This switch required a couple of "devo hat" spacers which replace the stock 705-401 spacer, and makes the 705-401 scales and liners accept the wider 707 blade. I'm not sure if the devo hat spacers might be had from Benchmade or not. I got a couple from someone who had a couple to spare. These type of spacers might be available from a knifemakers' supply outlet also. I think it would also be possible to modify the spacer from the 705-401 by cutting it shorter and maybe a little sander/shaping so that it could accept the 707 blade in the 705-401 frame. However, I also really like the open frame of the hybrid created by the use of the devo hat spacers.
All the switcherooing took me about an hour (my fingers aren't as nimble as they used to be) and I'm not a knifemaker. Now that I've done it once, I think I could cut the time in half...but actually it is therapeutic doing it, so I'm not in a hurry. Technically it was not difficult. I would recommend keeping a small bowl handy to put the parts in while the work is done. A little lock tite goes a long way ;-)
So...hope you enjoy the pix and give it a try if you are so inclined...I like the look and feel of my new hybrid Benchmade...plus I now have a unique 705 blade in 707 handles...and a unique 707 blade in 705-401 handles...kinda kool.
