Homemade refractory and ITC100

Sorry if this is already posted somewhere. I've searched and can't seem to find what I'm lookin for...

Question/situation is that I live close to a ceramics/pottery supply place which carries all different raw materials i.e. Alumina Hydrate, Kaolin, kiln wash, zircopax, sodium silicate, fire clay etc. literally 75-100 different raw materials. Building another forge and instead of paying small fortune shipping a bag of refractory (ideally castable) or buying ITC 100, is there a way to make a homemade batch of this stuff? I understand ITC 100 is gonna be tough to beat but even if I could make something that would be half as good that would offset the price to buy and ship online.

Forge I'm building is just a small portable propane forge, lined with 2" of Kaowool.

Also , talked to someone at this pottery place few times and they didn't even know what ITC 100 was ... Haha

Thanks!

It would help to know where you live.

You don't need a cast liner for a small forge .... actually, you don't want one. Also, home made refractory is rarely as good as the proper stuff.

Get 5-10 pounds of satanite from the pottery supply or from HTT&R. Use the wool, line with 1/4" of satanite, cure, coat with a thin coat of ITT-100, cure again. - use for may years. All supplies can be bought from HTT&R. They ship heavier items in flat rate boxes.

I ordered some satanite from Home Depot and had them ship to the store which was free. Then I went and picked it up. Not sure if you have an option like that?

Satanite at HD? I know that carry the pre-mix like Hercules, but never saw Satanute. Their website doesn't show it.

Thanks Stacy. Central OH area. I got my materials for my first forge from that site. Def seemed like the best deal in terms of shipping. Reason I was trying to make something was bc I have 2-3 pottery supply places in town. They have raw materials for pottery. Figured out how to make a really good wash like ITC 100 with what they have. But as far as refractory cement/mortars the had nothing. None had even heard of satanite. One stocked Sairbond..? Also allied mineral and unifrax are in town as well (two huge refractory supply manufacturers). Drives me crazy I can't buy anything from them, only sell to industrial places. Allied referred me to they're distributor, also very close. They're trying to price me out some supplies , they can order Mizzou, kastolite, Kastite 2800, etc. Not sure what the last one is? Basically can order in anything but I have to pay freight for any order so pretty much same as shipping from online lol. Little better deal tho I guess. Have you ever heard of minro-z wash m77 by allied minerals? It's a type of zircon wash .

One of the pottery places stocks soft bricks 3000 deg type. Built a mini forge with that years ago. Thought about building a small forge with that but just need some good plans. Also little worried flux would eat it up...
