Homemade Sheath for a NMFBM

In this time of economic depression and a twenty year low on the exchange rate between dollar and pound I had to go to extra lengths to save some cash for blades. Sometimes living on noodles and water isn't enough. So to that end it was time to make rather than buy a sheath for my new NMFBM.

I had two plastic tubes that were just too short so I cut them lengths ways and put them in the oven until they became soft enough to lie out flat. Next I heated them again and put the NMFBM in diagonally between the sheets of plastic, applied the pressure and let it set. Drilled the holes popped in the rivets and cut off the extra plastic. I then sanded the edges and laced the sheath up with some paracord.

Here's some pics. The orange sheath some of you will have seen before, made from a traffic cone, the middle sheath came with the CGFBM and then there's my latest DIY sheath. The last pic shows a spare plastic tube I have, if you look closely you can see the word 'Tripwire' on the tube and the sheath.

(Apologies for crappy pics but i've still to master getting a good crisp pic that isn't too big for uploading)

WOW !

That looks great, real serviceable and that's what matters.

Talk about having a one-off custom sheath

...and it's all yours !

Hey nice job, man. Those look pretty good! You should buy some Kydex. It is very inexpensive and is basically the same process you just did, but may be a bit easier to work with.

Uh oh. I think it's time I break out the photos of my infamous "sprinkler head" sheath. Muahahahahahaha.

Seriously - awesome job. I love that kind of improvisation.

As us Yanks say - "necessity is the mother of invention"

And I think you did a great job:thumbup:

Cheers guys, just trying to make the best with what I have about.

I do need to make a better foam press to make sure the plastic molds closer to the blade and hence give me a smaller sheath, mine could almost double as a paddle! The other thing I need to do is get longer rivets, the ones I have are maybe 1 or 2mm too short so I need to really hammer them to make sure they go through and form.

Once i've made a few more i'll be buying some kydex, I should be over in the US this summer so i'll make sure to have room in my luggage for loads of sheath materials when I head home.

Thanks again to Tyrkon who first educated me to the ways of sheath improvisation with the 'sprinkler head'. For me that should be a sticky here.

My next sheath will be for a War Boar so fingers crossed.

Oh you have gone way above and beyond what I tried. Seriously, great stuff. I can't wait to see the next one. :)

A traffic cone? Really?

Both DIY-ers look good. You, sir, are to be commended and should reward yourself by forgoing tonights noodle dinner for SPAM!
