Well, this one sat around unfinished for over a week, but I finally got it done...

I'm learning a little on each new sheath --- for example I learned on this one to wet the edges before sanding... These are my smoothest edges yet. I also tried a little wet molding on the belt loop, simple, but it worked pretty good.

I free handed the vines after seeing Dwaynes recent work on the Koster knives... I think I definitely need some more tools for carnving, etc...

One question regarding carving --- do you guys do that after the sheath is glued up? I'm beginning the think it might be better to do it on a flat piece of leather before gluing, etc. But I tend to do a lot of shaving/sanding to the edges after gluing, so I'm afraid the carved pattern wouldn't end up centered...

Thanks again to Sparks for setting this sheath forum up --- I'm learning a lot here

That is a nice looking sheath (and a nice knife)!

I believe that most all carving and stamping is done before anything is glued up or assembled. That is the only way I have seen it done in books and videos, and the way I have done mine.

Always do the carving, stamping, and tooling on the sheath before its put together. You will get much better results that way. I dont even cut the final shape of the sheath as the tooling will increase the size of the leather as you work it. For simple line work you wont have that problem, but for texture you will have lots of size increase as you move material away from the point of impact to the outer edges.

After you get the pattern tooled and the leather dry then you can cut the final shape of the sheath.

Some say you can tape the back of the leather to keep the size, but I havent tried that yet. Seems that the stretching is part of the natural process to me.

Good looking work though! I like your style. :)

Looks like you forgot to stitch the crowns down again, ;)

Great work! Beautiful!
