So I put custom wood scales on an old beater fixed blade i had laying around, and now the original sheath no longer fits. Anyone here have leatherworking experience they'd like to share with a neophyte? I have a decent sized piece of leather, the knife, and not much else in regards to leatherworking tools and skills.
any and all input/help would be greatly appreciated.

I get some cardboard about the same thickness as the leather and wrap it around and use staples on the seams. I then cut it down to a shape I'm happy with. Unpick the staples and voila a cutting pattern for your sheath. The cardboard also squashes a bit similar to wet forming.

Excellent. Thank you both for the input. I'll post pics of the process an finished product.

A good buddy of mine who knows nothing about leather work found an old pair of very ornate cowboy boots at a garage sale and made a sheath for his favorite fillet knife

He cut off the tops, made a fold-over and riveted the sides..he even incorporated a welt.
It turned out very nice, and damn pretty too.
