That's cool. When my boys were too young for real knives, my youngest wanted a wooden bowie knife. So I made this one for him:

I have one my mother whittled on July 16, 1925, according to the marking -- more of a stick, really. I believe she intended to wreak revenge on one or another of her six sisters who had been mean to her (she was the youngest). She painted it gray, but by the time the paint was dry she had forgotten about whatever had angered her. I think I inherited the knife gene from her. I spent a lot of formative years in our basement workshop making wooden swords, but alas, never found a dragon. Maybe just as well .

Whittled this out of Hickory while watching the kids play; no sanding or filing, only knife work. It's not great, but the kids liked it. It has been played with!
